karaoke party!
Who: Lucia and you!
What: Karaoke Party Time
When: Fall 20
Where: Cozy Kitchen
Warnings: n/a for now
[ On Fall 15th, a notice goes up on the noticeboard advertising a karaoke party at Cozy Kitchen on Fall 20th. It may be easy to miss with all of the pirate chaos, but Lucia will put a sign at the front of the restaurant to remind her fellow farmers of the event.
When Fall 20th rolls around, the smell of Lucia's food can be smelled from outside in town square. One may also catch another redhead bringing alcohol from his winery into the restaurant, or people from the other neighboring bar moving equipment into Cozy Kitchen. When everything's said and done, the restaurant is left with a nice evening setup. It's a small-ish space but there is plenty of food and alcohol for people to indulge in, as well as non-alcoholic drinks like tea and water. The karaoke machine is set up, and there are board games from the store that people can play while they're here.
People are free to sing, open mic style, as many times as they'd like. At some point during the party, however, Lucia will make it a point to play some slower songs on the machine and cite that it's been a while since the dance in Spring. Now might be a good chance to get one last dance in with someone before Winter hits! Finally, party games will be inevitable, so go ahead and participate or run your own. ]

Trahearne sits beside him, eyeing the glass curiously. ]
What's this?
no subject
Ah, it's...
( He hesitates, and then is quite sure to turn it (subtly?) such that his own lines to Trahearne, and vice versa, are not visible, and that it's turned toward the crowd. )
It shows lines that delineate the relationships between people. I've been working out the key.
no subject
Trahearne leans in to peer through the glass, and he's startled by the amount of crisscrossing lines throughout the room...
People have been busy, huh. ]
Oh.
[ ...... lots seem to come to him. no. oh no. ]
This is quite revealing.
no subject
( Oh no indeed! )
You're quite popular, hm? But I suppose it's no surprise most wouldn't fail to recognize your charm.
( lol... lmao... )
no subject
[ He parrots this absently. Literally what charm.
So many blue lines... And some red. Oh, an orange and pink one to Syrlya! Interesting. ]
Do you know what these colours mean?
no subject
Pink means romantic attraction, and orange means you're in a relationship. So it indicates you've a mutually reciprocated romance, in your case. Nice, yes?
no subject
[ Sheepishly. He looks to Mishka, pride and a hint of bashfulness in his eyes. It is, genuinely, nice. At last.
This makes him curious about his counterpart, however. He holds out his hand to ask to borrow the magnifying glass. ]
May I?
no subject
There's a split second of delay before he hands off the magnifying glass to him a little absently. )
Ah... Certainly.
( He glances away. Trahearne looks sweet all pleased and bashful. He hates it. )
no subject
...Until he finds Adelis the wallflower! He sees his own red and blue to him--the answer to those colors becoming quickly apparent--and the red and blue and...dotted pink to Mishka.
For a brief moment, Trahearne lowers the glass to flash a knowing smile at Mishka.
And back he goes to scanning the crowd, pointing it away from Adelis now. There are a couple of other lines he sees stemming from the other Ostoyan--blue, red, green--and his curiosity, always his downfall, has him follow them to...
Oh.
...
Pointedly, he moves the glass away from him and towards a random section of the crowd. ]
...Besides pink and orange, have you figured out what the others mean yet?
no subject
He's not really looking at where Trahearne is dragging the magnifying glass; he's mostly focused on making sure Trahearne doesn't point it near him, specifically.
Distracted as he is, he doesn't think there's anything that he needs to keep Trahearne from seeing, anyway. When Trahearne calls for his attention, he sees the glass pointed at some other group, which does not arouse his suspicion. )
... Red is for intercourse, and blue is for kissing. Then there is... Dark purple for enemies, and green for... I suppose, a romantic inclination that is not fully love yet. Or so it has been speculated to me.
( Thanks, he hates it! )
There are some few rarer colors, as well, but I'm still piecing together their meanings. Without much of a key for some, there's not much to do but ask the individual directly as to what characterizes their relationship with another.
no subject
Well. Even among this group of others he is not particularly well-acquainted with, he sees lots of those two particular colors. Oh my. Should he be privy to this? This feels wrong.
The guess as to what green means settles into his skin, into the hard wood that makes up his core. Something faint twists inside of him, and for a brief second, his expression falls. A seed of doubt takes root, and he feels himself wither.
Thanks, he hates that, too! ]
Fascinating. [ Regardless, his tone remains even, lowering the glass to his lap as he pauses in thought. When he turns to Mishka to return the glass--looking at his face, not through the lens--he's smiling. ]
I suppose some people have more unique bonds or feelings that cannot be assigned simpler colours.
[ People are different, as are their ties. ]
no subject
... It does seem like an oversimplification, doesn't it?
( He glances away, gaze drifting inevitably to Adelis further away. )
I am more interested in the strength of each line, I will admit; the intensity of emotion.
no subject
[ LITTLE DOES HE KNOW WHAT'S TO COME... ]
Do the lines vary from person to person? [ His glance through it was brief, and he didn't pay much attention to anything but the colors themselves. He nods at the glass again. ] Tell me what you've learned, Mishka.
no subject
No; it's too simple to suggest that— at least, as far as I could tell. But I suspect they cannot represent magnitude purely because... I know my feelings are heavy. The arrows that are mine cannot be the same weight as the feeling of every other.
( He studies the crowd vaguely, but his gaze, without the magnifying glass, drifts elsewhere for a moment, toward Adelis again, before it returns quickly. )
... It makes me wonder how heavy the feelings of other people are, or if they're heavy at all. You don't feel lightly, certainly.
no subject
[ Trahearne's tone drops a bit as his eyes settle on Syrlya amidst the crowd. He's been holding back, admittedly. He's afraid of scaring him. Still, for some reason. ]
Many refrain from showing their depths until they have another's trust, I imagine.
[ He turns to smile at Mishka, again. ]
I think that makes our relationship unique, in a way.
no subject
( He rests his cheek against his palm, setting the glass on the table. )
... It makes me uneasy. If I make plain how deeply I feel and I'm told it sickens them... ( Glances down at his cup, still much left. ) I'd...
( ... )
... I don't know what I'd do.
( Trying not to get too explicit around Trahearne... )
no subject
Why would you say that?
[ Be it the curse, or the insects, or everything else that makes Mishka up, Trahearne hasn't found anything particularly sickening about him. He is plagued like many others are here. But doesn't that just make him who he is? ]
I can speak from experience that worrying about things yet to pass will only make yourself feel worse.
no subject
... I suppose that's true. ( He smiles, a little. He does believe Trahearne understands this. ) I... think I just... I want to drown him. In affection, in feeling... It's hard to manage. I don't think the way I feel looks pretty.
no subject
...I don't think how we genuinely feel will ever be pretty.
[ He glances over at Adelis. ]
But if he returns your feelings, then he will find them beautiful nonetheless. Because they come from you.
no subject
...
( His gaze falls from Trahearne's profile, and he follows Trahearne's gaze to Adelis, and he fixes his own there. He wonders if Adelis feels the same, if in different words. )
... I don't know how to explain the circumstances that lead up to it, ( because blaming it on a bonus effect just seems to undercut the whole thing, ) but... I ended up— I told Adelis that I would... propose to him, if I made it through things. And he said that I could.
( please send help )
... I suppose that it is true he knows what I am like, to an extent. He understands my weight.
no subject
He scarcely moves as Mishka speaks, not wanting to rush him in his thoughts or in his speech. And when the word "propose" hits his ears, a smile slowly blooms over his face as delight takes over. ]
Mishka, that's-- [ He's...so happy for him. Unbelievably so. Trahearne can't help but reach out and gently place his hand on his arm. ] That's wonderful. I am overjoyed for you. For both of you.
[ His gaze softens. ]
I have faith you will make it through. And you will both be happy.
no subject
He never expected to get congratulations on a (pre) engagement, and he might not want to hear this from most people while he himself is still uncertain, but it's nice from Trahearne. He does feel a little bit less lost, even if he still remains bewildered and flustered. )
... Thank you, sincerely. I hope that I can make it so.
( Because, well... It's a matter of if the treatment works. There's a lot that's up in the air right now, with not a lot of clarity. But it is something. )
I have... ten days until I've decided to see treatment. I'd like to spend that time with him until then.
no subject
That's not a lot of time.
Trahearne worries first for Mishka and Adelis, that their time is getting cut short. That if it doesn't go well, then they will not get the chance to let their relationship bud and grow and flourish in a land away from Ostoya as they so deserve. They deserve so much more than ten days. Ten years, ten decades, ten centuries.
There's only a fleeting thought in his mind that this may mark the end of his friendship with Mishka, too. But he's not as worried about that. He's grateful that he had the chance to meet and get to know him. He will miss him if it doesn't work out. ]
Then what are you doing here?
[ Trahearne's smile widens; he puts pressure into the hand on Mishka's arm, coaxing him up, pushing him towards Adelis. ]
Go be with him.
no subject
Mishka is surprised, but he takes the invitation, though it seems to just embarrass him a little more, to act on his own wants. And he does want this, and he's... glad he knows Trahearne, who understands him.
(Even if, for a time, that fondness for Trahearne will tinge with some bitterness in its aftertaste.)
Slowly he gets up, slipping the glass into a satchel, and nods. )
... Thank you.
( And though this is embarrassed and awkward, it is genuine.
A beat, lingering, but adds: )
... In ten days, if it is not too reminiscent for you, I would be pleased if you could come to the site of my treatment. Adelis and Syrlya will receive invitations, too.
( ... )
Strange as it feels to admit, I feel that you have become one of the people who remind me who I am. So... I think it would help me remain myself, to see you.
no subject
Trahearne just watches Mishka get up; there's a warmth in his chest, a bittersweet one. He's touched that the other would invite him to such a momentous, horrifying occasion. Touched that Mishka thinks they're close enough to invite him along. Of course he'd say yes. ]
I would be honoured. I would love nothing more than to be there for you.
[ Trahearne gets to his feet as well, glance flitting briefly to Adelis before resting on Mishka again. ]
I have hope for you, Mishka. Even if you don't. For your sake, and for Adelis's. I want you to live the happy life you both deserve.
