karaoke party!
Who: Lucia and you!
What: Karaoke Party Time
When: Fall 20
Where: Cozy Kitchen
Warnings: n/a for now
[ On Fall 15th, a notice goes up on the noticeboard advertising a karaoke party at Cozy Kitchen on Fall 20th. It may be easy to miss with all of the pirate chaos, but Lucia will put a sign at the front of the restaurant to remind her fellow farmers of the event.
When Fall 20th rolls around, the smell of Lucia's food can be smelled from outside in town square. One may also catch another redhead bringing alcohol from his winery into the restaurant, or people from the other neighboring bar moving equipment into Cozy Kitchen. When everything's said and done, the restaurant is left with a nice evening setup. It's a small-ish space but there is plenty of food and alcohol for people to indulge in, as well as non-alcoholic drinks like tea and water. The karaoke machine is set up, and there are board games from the store that people can play while they're here.
People are free to sing, open mic style, as many times as they'd like. At some point during the party, however, Lucia will make it a point to play some slower songs on the machine and cite that it's been a while since the dance in Spring. Now might be a good chance to get one last dance in with someone before Winter hits! Finally, party games will be inevitable, so go ahead and participate or run your own. ]

He wonders, for a moment, if Trahearne said anything in the same vein as Adelis did but about him.
He shifts to look back as his drink, then up at the ceiling.] I was... not happy, but I had accepted well before his death that he would not be for me. There were things far more important than my wants, and so long as he loved me as a friend I could live with that. And then I lost him and this is all new territory that I don't really know what I'm doing in.
But I think I understand. I was frustrated with you, too. For the hurt you caused him and... for seeming to take for granted that you had him.

... Then we really are of a similar mind, I suppose.
( He lifts his glass in a half-hearted toast, before raising himself up (weight still on his elbows on the counter, though) to drink more in a sip than he should. )
... I had felt also Adelis could not be for me. His life would always take him out of Ostoya, it would always take him down a path in diametric opposition to my own, and I was allowed only the length of the leash the Syndicate gave me. I suppose it is hard to understand things are different when they are.
( So he sort of gets where Syrlya is coming from. But.
He half laughs, though. )
You know, I was more irate with you for scolding Trahearne at the auction than how you scolded me.
( Though he also didn't enjoy that for sure. )
no subject
Were you? [He raises a brow at that. That's a bit of a surprise, but maybe he shouldn't be. If Mishka was already so close to Trahearne, of course he's nosy.]
I was cross with him for writing that application without talking to me. For a lot of reasons, that I suppose don't matter now that we've confessed.

( Their argument blew over, they forgave each other (granted, he doesn't think Trahearne believed Syrlya committed any wrong to begin with), and clearly their relationship has taken a turn for the better. )
But I suppose the bar is much higher between the two of you— an expectation of respectful conduct that you felt was briefly breached. Myself and Adelis have a bar that is in the ground, I think.
( Subterranean, even. )

... Actually, I suppose now it is Beloved first, friend second, elder third.

( that was so sugary and he can't even eat it... )
... You and Adelis are alike in that regard, I suppose. Though I cannot say it is precisely equivalent to the status of a Firstborn, I, myself, am Master Assassin of the Ebon Syndicate, and it is a high a title as the phrasing might suggest. Adelis's sharp tongue would have been cut from his mouth were he anyone else. I strongly dislike disrespect.

My superiors didn't like it much at first, since they felt they had better candidates for me to spend my time on. More pliable ones they could keep loyal to the Syndicate. But I insisted.
( And he did spend quite a bit more time on Adelis than any other; for an apprentice who would become, at best, a freelancer. Were Mishka's track record not so flawless, he would not have gotten away with as much as he had. )
... He was even more of a spitfire as a child, if you can believe it. But he was a clever thing. He has a spark in him I've not seen in anyone else, and I felt to take that from him would be to take something fundamental.
( He sounds fond. )
He was far less refined in his vocabulary then, though. It seemed sometimes that as soon as he'd think of a cuss he'd say it, and if a string of insults didn't convey his anger well enough, he was very well likely to take off a finger. ( Joking or real? Well, ) It took quite a long time to clean up his speech into what it is now, but it's not shed its thorns very much.

No, I suppose not. [He rests his cheek on his hand.] I think that's what I enjoy most about showing him thinks to like--when he finds the words that aren't so sharp for something he favors.
I don't think he would let anything dull that spark, but it's all the better he had someone who saw its worth to guide him.

I don't know if I was the best for him, but there could have only been worse than me for him in that backwater town. ( He speaks like he's definitely thought of this before. ) ... But I'm glad he came here, though it be by a curious twist of fate. I'm pleased to see him fuss over animal husbandry, and fluster over silly competitions. These are not things he'd ever had the chance to do before, not expressions I'd seen him make... And yet, for all his complaints, he pursues his errands earnestly. It's fully endearing.

[Was Caithe ever the best mentor for him? Probably not, and yet he values everything she taught him. He wouldn't be so he is without her.]
I'm glad you are both here. I'm sure that is much the same for you.
[That these experiences are new, in a peace Ostoya never knows. But Mishka embraces them more readily, openly. So he understands the difference.]
Is that your favorite thing about him?

The question, though, leaves him quiet for a time, as if he has to take a moment to run through all the qualities he likes of Adelis and set them against each other in a gauntlet. And there are a lot of things he likes.
Fortunately, his repetitive alcohol habit only encourages his tongue. )
... Yes, I think so. Whatever he is that he likes or dislikes, that he believes or refutes, he does so with all his spirit. He is himself, without compromise.
( He asks the bartender for a second cup, but this time in better spirits. Now it's just a bad habit.
Still, it's similar to what it is he likes about Trahearne, even if their expression of this characteristic is strikingly contrary to one another. )
And you?
( His favorite thing about Adelis, that is. )

He shifts up, taking a long sip of his drink to think. Or muddy his thinking, as alcohol is wont to do.] So, similarly, I think my favorite thing is his resolve. That sort of dedication to himself... it also reflects on his dedication to things outside, too.
