prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

Either way, you can't deny that the knife is dangerous. Even without context, people put things like that away so that others don't get hurt whether accidentally or on purpose.

[ Gaku can probably read what Ellis is writing word for word since he's right next to him and he's writing quickly and neatly as usual. ]

[ His frown deepens. ]

And what's the point of this? Are you saying that's you?

[ He can't think of anything else that this metaphor could be referring to. ]

Something like that.

[ He thinks it's easier to understand if it's put like this, but of course, like most things, it needs context. ]

[ He sure needs context! But he doesn't need that context for what he says next, because he's sure of it. ]

What if I decide you're not dangerous? What then?

[ Ellis isn't sure how to answer the question. It's more that he has the answer in his head already, but to explain it to Gaku feels... difficult. So he skips some lines in the notepad to write something else. ]

If you were told to stop doing something that you think you were born to do--something passionate for you, I guess... you can just look for something else to do, right?

[ And much like Ellis, Gaku isn't sure how to answer that. It's a question that he feels needs context. There's a very specific reason Ellis is asking this. ]

That depends. What were you told to stop doing?

Existing.

[ It's taking a lot to stabilize his mood right now and it only gets worse. ]

He took away my purpose for exist

[ He never gets to finish that note when something plops onto his lap. ]

[ Upon a closer look, they look like marbles—the kind that kids used to play with. But the design is rather eerie. It looks like a real pair of golden eyes that stare back at you— ]

[ Ellis grabs the eyes and throws them at the nearest cherry blossom tree, screaming with his hands holding the sides of his own head tightly.

His stabilization powers can't hold his emotions back. That's how intense it is. Ellis is absolutely freaking the hell out right now. ]

[ This is the first time he's ever heard Ellis make any sort of sound and it sets his nerves on edge. Or maybe it was the marbles that did it, their staring right up from Ellis' lap. Whatever it was, Gaku finds himself frozen for several seconds, unable to react.

What does he do? What should he do?

Looking between the marbles now rolling away from a nearby cherry blossom tree and Ellis, he eventually snaps out of his indecision and pulls Ellis close, his hand pressing on the back of his head to bury Ellis' face against his shoulder. ]

[ He clings onto Gaku as if he's the last lifeline for him to stay sane. The cherry blossoms blow, but the accursed things stay right there, far away from Ellis. Ellis doesn't cry, but he's close to hyperventilating. He doesn't speak much, so his throat feels raw after that initial scream. Loud whimpers come from him, since he really doesn't know volume control. How could he, when he's been deaf all his life? ]

[ Gaku wraps his other arm around Ellis, his hand rubbing up and down along his back. He's not used to comforting people like this, but he'll certainly try. Hopefully his own even breathing can help Ellis calm down a little.

The volume of the whimpers don't bother him, though. This is something Ellis clearly needs to let out, so he can do it all he likes. ]

[ They're really just doing this out in the field, huh? The cherry blossoms continue to sway with the occasional wind.

Ellis isn't supposed to feel safe with anyone, but the way he's hugged makes him believe for a split second that he could be safe.

...

He buries his face into Gaku's shoulder even more. ]

[ They sure are! But Gaku isn’t an idol here, so he doesn’t really care.

He’s blunt and not very good with words, so it’s a good thing that he doesn’t feel like he needs to say anything at all right now. All Gaku does is rub his back, his motion slightly slower in an attempt to further calm him.

He keeps his hand on the back of Ellis’ head, his thumb rubbing small circles. It’s a new sort of way to comfort someone that he isn’t familiar with, but he figures he’ll give it a shot. ]

[ Ellis isn't exactly comforted by the gesture, but that's not Gaku's fault. The fault lies within Ellis alone. He isn't sure whether he should allow himself to feel safe or not. These people... he's only known them for a week at most. He still doesn't cry. There's nothing to cry about—things that have happened will stay that way. Once he regains enough of his senses, he forces his feelings to stabilize again. He doesn't want to be a wreck for so long, to be vulnerable in someone else's hands.

He lifts his head and pulls himself away from Gaku, but he still sits there on his own legs, staring at the ground. ]

[ It's an oddly swift recovery, and it leaves Gaku frowning as Ellis pulls away. It's strange... but he doesn't know if he should ask about that just yet.

After giving Ellis another minute or so to gather himself, Gaku reaches up to tap on his shoulder and get his attention. ]

Wanna talk about it?

[ Unfortunately for Gaku, the answer is a very firm no as he shakes his head. Perhaps not now, but later (it will definitely be later) as Ellis doesn't feel comfortable enough to talk about it right now. He sort of hopes that it won't be brought up and talked about again.

He thought he could have had a great life here, but now he just feels like cursing the goddess instead--is he didn't feel so tired.

The samoyed finally comes back because and nudges Gaku a little with its nose. What is happening. ]

[ Gaku sighs, crouching down to stick his face in all that fur before pulling away and gently patting the dog's head. ]

If I knew, buddy, I'd tell you.

[ But he has no fucking clue what's going on...

Gaku looks back up at Ellis, studying him for a moment before grabbing his hand and putting it on the dog's head. ]

Hug the dog. You'll feel better.

[ The dog is soft while it's pretty clueless on the current situation, tilting its head. Ellis looks over at Gaku, about to mouth something to him until the samoyed tips Ellis over and flops on top of him. Warm person cushion. ]

[ Gaku can't hold back the laugh that erupts from him, and he gently lays a hand on the dog's head, crouching down next to Ellis. ]

Can you breathe?

[ Sorry, he can't see with all this white fur in his face. He tries to move it out of the way and then sees Gaku. He lets out a small huff, a little embarrassed but not too much and waves his hand back and forth as if to say that he's fine. ]

[ Gaku smiles down at the sight now that he's not worried about Ellis suffocating under all that fur.

A gust of wind brings forth another round of cherry blossom petals, and Gaku catches a few of them and sprinkles them over Ellis and the dog. Very cute. ]

[ Ellis sneezes when one blossom lands on his nose with a combination of the dog's fur. Ew... he feels gross. So does the dog. ]

[ That makes him laugh. Sorry, Ellis... ]

You're cute when you get caught off guard.

[ You know what? This feels much better. Even though he just had a huge PTSD moment and forced to stabilize himself, seeing Gaku laugh after he calms down is... well, nice. Perhaps it's because of who it is—Gaku, whose expressions are sometimes a mystery to figure out for him.

He looks at Gaku and there's a small smile on his face that's different from his usual ones as he mouths: "thank you". ]
