prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

[Ah. Edamura certainly is honest, isn't he? Diluc appreciates that about him, but he gets the distinct impression that the ho in the equation runs the house whether Edamura likes that or not. He's a small dog with a loud bark, in other words... but Diluc doesn't say as much aloud.]

He can only impact your life as much as you allow him to. If he causes you too much trouble, throw him out.

[Like trash. Give him the boot, Edamura. The Goddess will maybe understand and rehouse Laurent elsewhere if he proves to be too much of an issue.]

[ Won't he be surprised at who regularly to-- it's a good thing Diluc doesn't mention his assessment.
His actual words have Makoto nodding. ]

You know what? You're right, Diluc. Either he helps and we get out of this together, or... it's not my problem anymore.

[ He looks back over, his expression even, resolute! ]

Is that the plan for yours too?

[He can only hope Makoto isn't the type of man who says he'll do the thing and then finds himself incapable of doing the thing once it's time to, you know, do it. Best of luck kicking out Laurent or making him work, Makoto. Diluc will be eager to hear how that went later.]

Indeed. If my "housemate" doesn't contribute at least as much as I do, I have no intention of letting him linger about and mooch. I have no issue disposing of those who insist on being useless.

[And he sounds like he means it too. Oof, Diwuc is mean!]

[ Too bad he is, at least with stuff like this. Laurent and him are both suckers. ]

Well, I agree. But disposing sounds a little harsh, don't you think?

I mean, it's not like you'd actually murder him or anything... [ Makoto says it so confidently, but tacks on a less sure-- ] right?

Is it?

[He repeats, because how necessary is it to keep someone around who can't pull their own weight? Diluc is well aware that he's being harsh, but ask him how much he cares. The answer may surprise you.]

That depends. [You're funny, Makoto. Real funny.] Do you take me for the murderous type?

[ Makoto laughs without nervousness. Actually, it's just a small genuinely friendly one and it surprises even himself. Diluc just looks so serious. ]

Yeah, it is. You can't just go disposing of anyone just because they're lazy. Kick them out, sure, it'll force them to figure it out maybe.

Or-- [ Makoto sort of grimaces, shoulders slumping like he's actively realizing this fact about Laurent as he's speaking. Live, in real time-- ] --maybe they'll run up our farm tabs with alcohol and food from the restaurant so then we'll have to give up all our hard work anyway.

[Well, isn't Makoto earnest? More than that, he's a man with a strong moral compass. Imagine how much it'll shock Diluc to learn what Makoto actually does in his day to day life at home.

...So while he's poised to agree, what Makoto follows that up with has Diluc quietly, briefly laughing. He's earnest with a strong moral compass, but... he's also a pushover, isn't he? No need to fill on the blanks, Makoto— Diluc can easily see how you fell in with this man.]

You speak like you have any obligation to pay for this man and his bad behavior. You aren't his mother, Makoto. If he's invoked the barkeep's ire because he expects you to pay his tab, let him work in the kitchen and dig himself back out of that hole.

[It's not your problem, Makoto... but that's the problem with being so big-hearted: everything becomes your problem when you think you can help them. Diluc understands as well as he does simply because he was exactly that kind of boy in his youth. He gets you, Makoto.]

[ Makoto would protest being considered a pushover, but then again there are plenty of things he likes to protest that are true more often that he likes to admit. He resists the urge to click his tongue. ]

Well, of course I'm not. I don't care what he does as long as it doesn't make our farm look bad. [ Stop pointing out the obvious!

Yet, somehow that leads him right into a shade of thoughtfulness-- ] But it's also our farm for a reason, don't you think?

I mean, even if she decided randomly, what are the chances out of all the worlds out there that we ended up stuck here together with someone we already know?

[Ah... Perhaps he's made a point there, but Diluc doesn't know how to feel about it. He ended up living with Kaeya again for the first time in years and not by choice. If the Goddess has some greater plan in mind, it certainly isn't hard to believe. Diluc hums.]

She must have her reasons, but what do you presume that reason might be? You would know better than her, surely.

[ Makoto sighs, still thinking of Laurent. He isn't about to tell Diluc his real theory that this might be some otherworldly punishment for all the mistakes they've made. But Laurent was way worse than him! This isn't very fair at all. ]

I don't know. It's not like we're friends or anything. [ A spike of laughter, sardonic despite the short burst and the flat sentiment that follows-- ] and it sounds like you want to marry your partner as much as I do.

[ Famous last words, continuing his track record from home. ]

[Go ahead and tell him they're in hell, Edamura. Diluc will believe you.

...But while Edamura is clearly joking with regards to marriage, he's uh. Correct? Not that Diluc will admit it, fighting back the urge to sneer when Edamura strikes the nail on the head. Anyway! Moving on!!]

Who knows? Maybe the Goddess in her infinite wisdom suspects you'd be happy marrying this man you despise so much. Have you given it any serious thought?

['Moving on' means gently punishing Edamura for a mistake he hadn't meant to make, but don't mind him. This is how Diluc socializes.]

No way. And despise is a little strong too, you know.

[ Makoto tacks that last part as he catches on though, sounding just as friendly as before when he asks-- ]

But since you asked: have you given it serious thought yet?

[Stop! Stop!! The answer is yes and Diluc really doesn't want to admit it. He huffs, as if that'd possibly dissuade Makoto.]

In the past, perhaps, but my priorities have shifted. There may come a time when I need to settle down and marry to carry on my family name, but that isn't of much concern to me right now.

[ Makoto feels suddenly like he's been talking to some prince this whole time or something. And that their similarities have come to an end.

To him, the idea of marrying Laurent never crossed his mind.
And the thought now is just laughable, while Diluc is so serious again. ]

Well, okay. But, why not just carry on the family name with your partner then?

[Diluc is nobility, so close enough. Even so, he's never considered himself to be of higher standing than the common man, but the way he was raised is evident enough in the way he speaks and carries himself.]

My partner...? Are you referring to the man I'm living with?

[Well, Makoto? Are you?]

Well, yeah. You said you'd considered him in the past, right? Maybe the Goddess in her infinite wisdom suspects you'd be happy marrying him too.

[ Yes, he just genuinely returned those words back at him. But he doesn't imitate Diluc or anything. ]

[Ah, hm, yeah. He's rethinking his assessment of Edamura right about now, visibly annoyed. It's just unfortunate that Edamura is completely right.]

You're awfully obnoxious, aren't you? Perhaps I should feel bad for whatever person you end up marrying.

[ Makoto blinks in surprise, hands coming up a little defensively. Maybe later he'll realize he hit a nerve of truth, but for now it is damage control and bristling at being called obnoxious. ]

Hey, I wasn't trying to offend you, you know. Marry whoever you want, I don't care.

[ He stops himself with a sigh, a dissmissive wave, and moves on-- ]

How about we forget it? Want to swap a square or something?

[Say no more, Makoto. Seriously, he'll thank you to not say anything more, taking his card from his pocket and handing it to Makoto.]

Take your pick... within reason. I prefer a fair exchange, so I'll take your card as well, please.

[ Makoto's friendly smile returns at the success of distaction. And he easily offers up his bingo card. It's been modified with little pieces of paper affixed to pointedly hide his smut squares. Not that it's hard to lift up and peek if Diluc is curious.

He's don't nothing on his square at this point in time. ]

Here you go. Oh, ours are pretty different, huh?

[Hm... Different feels like an understatement. Even so, he sees one on Edamura's card that's very easily fulfilled, reaching out to give his head a few mechanical pats. Pat pat. Good dog.]

Consider this a favor owed. I'll let you return it at your leisure.
