prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

[ Ellis tilts his head after interpreting all that. Yoyagi parks sounds particularly nice to go to and Ellis wonders if he can recreate that feeling in Crescentview.

But then he thinks he misunterpreted something. "Hole-in-the-wall style restaurant"? The only hole in the wall Ellis can think of is-- ]

Do they feed you through a hole in the wall...?

[ Since it's a restaurant, it's not like there will be "dick in the box" surprises, right. ]

Ryuki takes a bit of a moment to understand this, and when he does to Ellis's credit -- he laughs shortly before cutting himself off in a slight cough. ]

Uh -- no. No, no, it means -- hole-in-the-wall means an establishment that's really casual. Not like your usual place that has a big sign, and really obviously looks like a restaurant. A little bit out of the way, and really humble. That kind of thing.

Though I guess some places kind of do that...?

[ HE MEANS NO/LOW-CONTACT RESTAURANTS WHERE THEY GIVE YOU FOOD THROUGH A SLOT. He's just entertaining Ellis's assumption but doing a terrible job. ]

[ Oh. He thinks he gets it... until Ryuki tells him that people really do feed others through a hole in the wall?? Wow. Other cultures are so wild. He nods as if he understands. ]

[ Taking Food Hole to a new meaning. ]

I think Gen would like you. If you do ever come to Tokyo, how about I buy you lunch there? Or dinner.

[framestory]

[ Real life Tokyo... He has that same wistful expression just like before that only lasts half a second. It sounds nice. Ellis already feels out of place on this island. What's not an entire populous city? Everything is so real, while he feels so, so fake.

He smiles and nods again, writing down on his notepad again. ]

Can you cook?

[unsync]

[ Let's talk about it Ellis, what's a little bit of existential dread to bring two folks together? ]

Ah... uhm, only kind of. Not really. I haven't cooked in a while, either.

[ He looks a little distant for a second, but he just shakes his head. ]

What about you?

[framestory]

[ He gives a hand gesture that means "so-so". Ellis can only cook basic things, or things with easy instructions that doesn't require too much measuring. It's definitely more than just instant ramen though. ]

I want to try your cooking.

[ ...

He thinks he may have to rent out a second book today. One for the field, one for the kitchen. ]

Do you mind if I practice first? It might be embarrassing for me otherwise. -- But I'm sure yours is great too! We could probably whip up together something okay, if we both put our heads and hands on it.

[framestory]

[ Ellis wonders if this is an invitation to cook together... and that Ryuki is inviting him over to his house even though Adelis would probably be there? Wowee. Ellis thinks that's exciting. He only has one recipe that he can actually make well and pass it off as looking impressive, so he thinks he'll make that. Yeah. Simple enough.

He shakes his head to show that he doesn't mind and grins since he's looking forward to it now. Can't wait.

But here they are! They have finally arrived at the cafe. ]

[ It is. Is he winning this flirting thing? He hopes so. That being said, cooking together does sound like a genuinely nice, laid-back thing to do and he isn't going to complain. He likes Ellis.

Wowee they've arrived. It's not like I completely forgot about the cafe or anything, wow let's look at the menu right away. Ryuki will be a gentleman(?) and pull out a seat for Ellis a little before scooting around, taking the menu, and showing it towards Ellis. He seems to already have a drink in mind. ]

Uh, great! So that's totally a thing we could do, sometime. I don't... think my roommate will mind?

[ He's lying. He thinks Adelis would definitely mind. Sometimes, we make sacrifices on other people's behalf. ]

[framestory]

[ Ellis doesn't quite look at the menu yet, because he has to see Ryuki talking to acknowledge that he spoke in the first place. That said, he knows Adelis and Ellis absolutely thinks he would mind, but that just makes it funny for him.

He glances down at the menu... hm. ]

What would you recommend for someone who doesn't like it too sweet?

[ He's making sure to look at Ellis every time he talks. Firstly because it's polite, and second off, because it's Polite. ]

How about tea? It's not too sweet, and you can adjust it with sugar and milk however way you want.

[framestory]

[ Oh, that sounds ideal, so he nods. He will take tea. What kind of tea? He doesn't know. Surprise him. Ellis puts the menu down and smiles, putting his book on the table. ]

[unsync]

[ Unfortunately, Ryuki grew up apparently with money and some taste, so you will be surprised by a nice ceylon. An optional lemon wedge! That's nice.

Special tastes only apply for other people. Ryuki himself has gotten a plain black coffee. ]

This is nice.

[ Don't be weird. He puts his book on the table. ]

I'd say I'm pretty good at studying, what about you?

[framestory]

[ Is... Is he good at studying? Ellis isn't sure, despite having "memories" of it. He'll just look at Ryuki with a sheepish smile that might suggest that he isn't. Only one way to find out. He brings up the book on the table and opens it. Mushrooms. ]

[unsync]

[ One word for Ryuki: nerd. ]

That's okay, it can't be that hard, right?

[ Easy: learning mushrooms like damp and dark places. Hard: figuring out what you need to build mushroom racks. Easy: remembering this place is wack and if you just put in a request for it, a mushroom rack or whatever it's called will basically appear overnight. Hard: harvesting the tons of little button mushrooms you will inevitably have under your care. ]

A lot of effort really goes into this...

[ If Ryuki doesn't leave with a ship, he definitely is leaving with a newfound appreciation for the farming industry. ]

[framestory]

[ Ellis nods as he looks through the text. There's so much text for general mushroom common traits alone. He looks back up at Ryuki upon realizing... yeah, he's not cut out for this. ]

It's all right now, because I am here! Half-Might!

I'm sure you can do it!

[framestory]

[ Such enthusiastic cheering... He still doesn't believe in himself (for various reasons), but he's curious and tilts his head. ]

I'm not sure if I interpreted this right, but "Half-Might"?

[ This is clearly more important than studying. ]

[unsync]

[ I'm always like haha I'm here already I may as well subject people to Half-Might and then immediately regret it because people just let him do this in canon but in rp people will question it like real sane human beings. ]

Oh, it's a character from an anime. It's been a good while since I watched any, actually, but that one always stood out to me. It's a show about heroes...

[framestory]

[ Ellis slightly tilts his head. ]

Do you want to be a hero?

[unsync]

[ He looks down at the table, then away from the note, his fingers curling slightly into a loose fist. ]

...My brother wanted to be.

[framestory]

[ Hm.

Hm!!

Ellis thinks he stepped on a dangerous social landmine, so he reaches out with both hands across the table for Ryuki to take. ]

[ He notices the hands, and smiles a bit. ]

Oh, no -- it's okay. It's been a long time. It's just the kind of thing he liked, you know? If things are feeling down, be that someone who can help... that kind of thing. I like that, too.

[framestory]

[ He withdraws his hands to write on his notepad to show Ryuki. ]

I think you can be someone's hero, Ryuki.
