( If Alhaitham were to ask himself on the sort of proposal he would expect to receive from Kaveh, he would likely envision something incredibly flamboyant, sentimental and over the top. Probably with tears. Definitely with tears. This bird of paradise certainly loves to fan his feathers and over dramatise things - and while they have already decided to get married, the Scribe may find his choice in proposal to be quite a surprising one.
From the start, this was Kaveh's intention. A showy, flashy proposal doesn't sound like the sort of thing that Alhaitham would like to receive. He's a simple man: Routined, pragmatic, not drawn to flair and drama in the same way that Kaveh is. That's why proposing to Alhaitham in the way that Kaveh wants wouldn't feel very fair. It wouldn't be a way to honour his partner and both of their needs - which is what a proposal should be. On the other hand, would Kaveh want to be on the receiving end of a flashy proposal? Absolutely! But he knows that Alhaitham would never do this. But he doesn't need any of that - all he needs is him, and to show him how much he loves him in his own, special way. And this is exactly what he has conjured up in the form of a well thought-out proposal after some careful planning. Kaveh knows Alhaitham better than most do.
This morning, he asked if Alhaitham would head into town to get some groceries for them. If asked why he couldn't, he would tell him that he wants to get a head start on drafting some designs for wedding invitations. Some of the couples in Crescentview may prefer something handmade, so he wants to make some samples. It's a half-truth - he did plan on doing that, but he also needed him to leave the house for an hour or so in order for him to prepare his proposal. When Alhaitham returns from the markets, he'll find that Kaveh is still sitting where he left him, painting all sorts of flora and plants on watercolour paper for the wedding invitation drafts.
The first thing that he should notice upon entering their home is the appearance of a brand new book on the kitchen table. It definitely wasn't there when he left the house. On the outside, the book is innocuous enough - there's no flashy design since Alhaitham isn't the type to judge a book by its cover. Art isn't what draws his attention - and that's fine. The outside appearance is simple and symbolic: It's an emerald green book patterned with red and gilded with golden accents. The green represents Alhaitham, the red represents himself. He knows that Alhaitham's most treasured possession is the green and gold book that his Grandmother got for him - this cover is a tribute to the book that he cherishes so much. Kaveh notices these details about him - the kind of books which go unread, the ones which are regularly used, and the one that he always returns to.
When Alhaitham opens the book, he'll quickly realise that it's not a book at all. There is an envelope which, when moved, will reveal a pair of rings. It's a nod to their favourite metals - Alhaitham's silver key and Kaveh's gold key. Except this time, the rings are silver and gold to symbolise their union. When Alhaitham opens the small envelope, he'll see a hand-written letter from Kaveh. On the paper, it reads:
Alhaitham,
I'm going to cherish you for the rest of my life, in the very same way that you cherish a fine book.
I love you. and I will love you forever, and even longer after that.
- Kaveh
The letter is short and sweet - not the sort of long romantic drivel that Alhaitham may have expected, either. Of course Kaveh feels as though he has so many things to say about how much he loves Alhaitham, but short and sweet felt the best. Inevitably, Alhaitham would get to hear for himself everything that Kaveh loves about him.
Once he is finished with the book, the Scribe will find Kaveh still painting plants and flowers, while knowing that his book proposal has been read and noticed. He feels happy about his decision to do things this way, and he genuinely wonders how Alhaitham will react. Detecting the other man approaching him, he calls out without turning his head, his chunky red hair clips and braided blonde locks visible from behind while he paints.)
No books were harmed in the making of that. It's all handmade. ( Just in case he gets accused of violating a book and turning it into art. )
[ Of course, Alhaitham suspects the exact reason why Kaveh has sent him out today. It's why he gives in to the request a bit more readily than he usually might. There's no secret about what season it is on the island - not just winter, but the season of bonds, of weddings, and they have already made their intentions clear to one another, but they know one another well enough that they both know Alhaitham isn't the one who will be doing the proposing in this relationship. If it were left to him, a question over breakfast and coffee would be good enough, and far be it from him to deny Kaveh the opportunity to do the sort of thing he does best.
Even if Alhaitham may have some reservations about how he expects Kaveh to go about it. He can all but see it, arriving home in a shower of rose petals, maybe some live musicians, exotic animals...rationally, he figures if Kaveh has an extravagant proposal, maybe they can have a more modest wedding, so he'll accept whatever form the proposal takes readily, even if such an approach wouldn't be his first choice.
In the end, so long as he gets to marry the man he loves, then the method itself doesn't matter. Much.
And yet, when he arrives home to find not the extravagant display he expects, but instead a simple, meaningful book containing a note and a pair of rings, he is...touched, though that word alone seems insufficient to describe the way his heart swells with affection and fondness.
Like him, Kaveh surely knew that Alhaitham would accept any kind of proposal he gave him, even if it was one that would make him grit his teeth. In the end, the approach wouldn't make much of a difference to the end goal. But this...Kaveh has given him exactly the kind of proposal he would want. Quiet, personal, thoughtful - demonstrating just how well Kaveh knows him, how well he knows his heart, perhaps better than Alhaitham himself even knows. He isn't often given to bouts of emotion, but as he holds the envelope in one hand, the other laying over the cover of the makeshift book, he lets himself simply smile.
Kaveh was the right choice. He always knew so in his heart, yet had spent so long trying to rationalize out why. In the end, he could only trust what felt right. Alhaitham is the sort of man who could have lived his entire life without a partner and been content, never really caring for what he was missing out on, but this...is better. He's never been so sure as he is in this moment.
Exhaling a wavering breath, he takes the rings from the envelope, before seeking out Kaveh. He doesn't respond with words, not just yet, but instead a gentle smile, far gentler than he is usually seen with, and his smiles are rare to begin with. Instead, he pulls Kaveh into his arms and kisses him, slow and passionate, pouring his heart into the way his lips move against his partner's. ]
When Alhaitham closes in on his space and kisses him, the blonde man eagerly welcomes the gesture, setting his paintbrush down on the table before wrapping both of his arms around the other man's body. There's a slight bend in his hips when he leans up to melt into their kiss, feeling his heart swell within his chest from every passing moment. Their lips work together slowly, tongues caressing, until Kaveh breaks away with one small peck. His brilliant ruby eyes gaze into the other's, with a hand coming up to brush his cheek. )
You liked it, then? ( He issues, proudly, despite already knowing he made the correct design choice for his proposal. )
[ It's a good kiss, lingering and deep and warm, and by the time they draw apart, Alhaitham's mouth is tingling, lips red and swollen, the now-familiar taste of Kaveh in his mouth. He even leans into that touch when Kaveh lifts his hand. Gods damn him, making Alhaitham this sentimental. He better not get used to it. ]
What gave you that idea?
[ He can't help a bit of his usual snark from sneaking in - some balance must be preserved, even as he dips his brow down to rest against Kaveh's. ]
Yes. I liked it. Now, give me your hand, you sweet fool.
( Kaveh chuckles softly. He'll treasure the sentimentality while it lasts.
The blonde raises his hand and presents it to his soon-to-be husband with a gentle smile brightening his face. His hand is soft, unmarked and a testament to the way that this guy prioritises beauty over wielding his claymore. This is exactly who Alhaitham is marrying - nothing less than his dramatic, pretty blonde self. )
[ It certainly is who he's marrying, but in this moment, Alhaitham can't think of anything he wants more. It helps that he's known Alhaitham for so long, that they've been committed, in some sense, to one another for years. In many ways, nothing will change. Some of his priorities have simply adjusted, that's all.
So Alhaitham takes Kaveh's hand and one of the bands he had found in the hollow book, slipping it gently and tenderly onto his ring finger. His fiance's ring finger. His, all his.
He swallows against a dry throat with the gesture, none of his characteristic wit rising to accompany this moment. There's just something all too...reverent about it, that not even he wishes to interrupt what he's feeling. ]
( Kaveh watches the process from start to finish as Alhaitham picks out one of the rings and then glides it on his finger. Being a romantic, Kaveh has had all sorts of fantasies about love and marriage throughout his life - and to be living through this moment of becoming affianced at long last is so surreal. Once the ring is on his finger, he lifts his hand, admiring the way that it sparkles in the light. It's such a beautiful, simple band - and symbolic for the two of them.
And once his own ring is on, he takes Alhaitham's hand and repeats the process. )
Now it's official. ( He makes a pleased him, glancing up to gaze at the man he's made this lifelong promise to. ) No backing out now, all right? My heart is yours for an eternity.
