[Van Zieks puts up a better fight than you'd expect from a fancy nobleman with no military service. That said, typically the places were he's used to fighting (the streets of London) don't have huge holes in the ground. So he really doesn't think to watch his feet that carefully, his whole attention needed to keep up with Childe and avoid getting far enough way that he loses the advantage.
