▶ WHO: Adelis and you!

≫ The Hands-on Approach
[ he was hoping he'd be able to put off dealing with it for longer, but life is never kind, as he's come to learn the hard way. he's put a decent effort into the fields thus far, but as the days went on, it became harder to stand outside for long periods of time...especially under the blasted sun, which still made his eyes throb in pain. even it's warmth can't chase off the ice cold beneath his skin, which drains the color from adelis' features and leaving him pale as a ghost.
finally, he can't take it anymore. his pride be damned, he can't stand being nearly utterly useless. so he shoves that stupid card in his pocket, laces up his heels and attempts to make himself look presentable, and locks the door behind him on the way out.
maybe you're a neighbour, who's farm happens to be not too far. maybe you're passing by on errands, to and from town. or maybe you run into him in town itself, gaze latching onto the first tolerable(?) person to pass his vision. ]
...Pardon me.
[ he looks, well...not good. he's abnormally pale, circles dark under his eyes. while adelis holds himself up high, back straight and gaze sharp, there's an exhaustion clinging to his limbs that's easy to note. ]
I require your...assistance with something, if you've a moment to spare.
[ he's trying really hard to make it look like this isn't paining him to ask. ]
≫ Overdue
[ while not the sort you'd think to frequent the library, should you enter one day, you'll happen to see him with a rather tidy stack right next to him. the titles vary, all from various genres and tip sections, but judging by the scowl on his face, he's not having a particularly swell time.
there's an exasperated noise as he drops the one he was currently holding beside him, closed, with a soft thunk. ]
Useless. [ he isn't shouting it, but he isn't particularly keeping quiet, either, as he grumbles to himself. ] This would be far easier if I could parse half the bloody words they were using. 'Simple' my arse.
[ maybe he needs a dictionary. ]

[ He's not really a people person, as most back home tend to be, but he's more prickly than the average Ostoyan. Trust issues will do that to you.
There's a grimace at the question, before a shake of the head. ]
No. I received it before I came here. In exchange for dragging me further from Death's reach, or so he said- personally, I think he's full of shite.
no subject
[Maybe, maybe not? He's not sure why this would be viewed with such sourness if it was something this guy had chosen deliberately... but humans did tend to be kind of fickle at times. It's not out of the question.]
I'd think that doesn't sound all that bad in comparison, but, uh... avoiding death is a pretty big deal. [It would make this guy prime target for a lot of things back home... kind of depressing to think about, but there's no need to dwell on work right now.] Did you have a choice in the whole thing?
no subject
[ He doesn't remember dying, truly- he remembers blacking out, before the ominous sound of a bell ringing and a dizzying sensation, like the world was falling apart. He remembers little of it, but apparently coming to save someone did bite him in the ass. ]
To remove a curse in Ostoya is practically impossible. He saddled me with a permanent handicap, so you'll forgive me if I think little of his apparent generosity. [ Stuck the bitter bitch with the touching curse, that is. ] I had a choice, yes- of which I valued more. I chose my mind, so my body was the one punished.
no subject
I don't assume you chose to be cursed to begin with. [... Well, duh, who would?? He realizes how stupid that sounds and stutters a little to catch up with himself before he gets too glaring of a look in return.] I-I, I mean... from what you said, it... sounds like it was kind of out of your hands entirely, right? Outside the choice of your mind or you body, I mean.
That someone, you know... took advantage of you, or something.
no subject
Perhaps bewilderment is a better term. ]
That would be an accurate description. [ Because that's what it was, naturally- standing in that forest and staring at that smug bastard's face as he laid out his terms like he was doing them a favor. ] After all, all that when the situation was his fault in the first place. I wouldn't have been picking my way through a vermin-infested tower had he not sent us on a bloody suicide mission in the first place.
[ Another reason why he's so vehemently irritated at being forced to dance to another powerful entities tune. ]
no subject
[An awful reality, one that just couldn't be changed sometimes. He's had to learn to let those drift, to acknowledge them as what they are or else dismiss what truly happened and was left behind.
He finds his grip tightening just slightly, before he eases it back to a relaxed state.]
I'm sorry. It's good you came out the other end, but... I don't imagine having a reminder haunting you is an easy way to live.
[He would know. But it's not the place for that. All he can do is offer a half of a smile.]
You didn't give me your name before. Could I ask who you are?
no subject
...And what have you to be sorry for? [ It's rather blank in tone, but perhaps a bit questioning. ] We don't hail from the same place, neither did you curse my blood. One who hasn't unbalanced the scales themselves need not extend any apologies.
[ He makes a mildly exasperated noise in his throat. He's so weirded out by this. ]
Rest assured I'll be rid of it one day, whether or not I have to jam his own bloody curse down his grinning maw myself.
[ He loves to bitch and grouse to whoever will listen, but he's moreso used to people just listening, or agreeing, not...well, whatever this is. He shifts his gaze and gives his hand a flex, not returning the smile. ]
...Adelis. Adelis Rosell. And yours, then?
no subject
Otegine [Just Otegine. If he has a family name, he's apparently not choosing to share it, simply tilting in his head in a gesture towards the path he'd been heading down.] I don't live that far, so... if you're ever in a tight spot again, Adelis, I'm here to help.
[Speaking of which...]
...You feeling any better?
no subject
[ So he's been taught. Really, what is wrong with some of these people. Adelis watches with a hawk-eyed glance as the other tips his gaze down with obvious embarrassment, and resists the urge to groan. What a fucking headache. ]
Otegine. [ An interesting name, but easy enough to remember. He follows the gaze down the road, squinting for a brief moment. Isn't that the way Syrlya lives...hm. ] ...And I suppose I'll keep that in mind.
[ He might as well take advantage of the 'generosity' of those who happen to know of his little affliction, than go spreading news of it around like a disease. Speaking of, Otegine will find, as Adelis looks down at their hands, that his skin is no longer cold. It's warm, just like that of a normal person, as if he's slowly leeched the taller man's body heat to make it his own. ]
It'll suffice. [ Not for very long, but... ]
no subject
[Since Adelis isn't feeling so much like a corpse under his fingers, Otegine considers pulling away. But instead, he just relaxes his grip to let Adelis make that choice. If he can still be used, he can stay put for a little longer.]
Good, good! That didn't take too long at all, huh.
Ah, I have something simple you can help me out with, once you've got the energy. I-If you want to, I mean.
I don't want you to feel you owe me anything.
no subject
Still, he doesn't feel much up to scolding people- the pinch of advice is all he's offering. If he chooses to give out parts of himself at every opportunity, it isn't Adelis' place to stop him. He's not about to start investing himself in other people's decisions yet. ]
It won't last long, but it will do for now.
[ Adelis' gaze flickers, not yet moving his hand as he lets his eyes narrow in mild suspicion. Still, he does hate having any favors looming over him... ]
...Very well. [ Luckily, the heat has leeched some of the exhaustion away already. ] The sooner I balance my scales, the better. What is it.
no subject
[He cocks his head with an easy grin. That Adelis still is choosing to hold his hand is really stroking his ego a bit. Hooray, he's actually helping!]
Do you have your bingo card on you?
no subject
[ Sarcasm: thick.
Keep it up and he'll take it away. He values his body in working condition, but his pride and natural Ostoyan Aura is strong enough to challenge that...but he's mildly interested at the mention of Bingo, so he'll let it slide. For now.
After a moment's pause of scrutinizing, he reaches down and pops the clasp on one of his thigh pouches, pulling out a neatly folded card. ]
This is what you're after, is it?
no subject
[He takes it with his free hand (he will continue this handhold as long you let him, Adelis) and carefully unfolds it between thumbs and forefinger, just long enough to scan some of the squares--]
Aha -- okay, here we go, this should be a breeze. [He'll hold the card back out to Adelis, eyes bright.] Come on, we gotta go find a tree.
[There are so many trees. Adelis could turn around and find a tree. But maybe Otegine wants to find a BIGGER tree.]
no subject
A...tree. [ There was a tree-climbing sqaure, wasn't there. Simple and quick, he just hasn't found someone to do it with yet...although that's about to change.
Maybe. Because at that declaration, Adelis cranes his head around before looking back at Otegine himself, looking him and down. ]
...Such as the one right over there.
[ The one...maybe ten feet away from them? ]
no subject
Nah, need a better one. Taller.
It's not really climbing if I can just lift myself into it, is it?
no subject
Oh, yes. Of course. My mistake.
[ What a privilege some people have, being over fucking six feet and not having to wear heels to breach national average height. Adelis should kick him in the shins just to knock him down a little.
...Anyway. Bigger tree. ]
By all means, then. Find us one.
no subject
Mn! I know exactly where we can find one, actually. The path over on the way to the farm has one that the cat keep trying to climb. Figures I would have to learn how to get up there, anyway.
[A beat, in which he finally turns to truly look at Adelis' face and note the irritation.]
Is... that alright with you? I just want to make it count.
no subject
Well, at least he's not going to lead on a chase to find one his giant frame can actually scale without ease. Adelis huffs lightly, arms crossed over his chest before he realizes the other has already noticed his ( VERY OBVIOUS ) aggravation. ]
I'm perfectly fine. [ Just salty! It happens! ] It would be a waste otherwise, I suppose.
[ He offers a vague gesture with his hand. ]
Lead the way, then, since you've already a place in mind.
no subject
He nods, eagerly leading Adeliss a short way down towards the farm he shares with Syrlya. The tree in question probably comes into view soon enough - not necessarily taller in scope, but broader, with its branches much higher off the ground.]
Right. Up we go.
[He gets a running start, and the fact that the man is at least athletic becomes quickly apparent. He's not nearly as fast as he's used to, with what the goddess has done, but he still gets a good enough jump - one foot off the ground, the other off the trunk, grasping his hands firmly on the thick spiraling of an outstretched bough and letting the strength of his upper arms work from there to hoist himself up.
What a pain, to not be able to just jump up fully... but it could be worse, he supposes.
Catching his breath, he straddles the bough underneath him, lowering his arm.]
Come on. Let's get you up here.
no subject
Indeed, it's bigger...somewhat. The boughs are far higher up, and that in itself poses a better challenge to somebody with long enough arms. Not that it intimidates him any- he's climbed far higher, even while younger.
He is, however, not expecting Otegine to do a fucking running start, yeeting himself straight into the tree and hauling himself up by the sheer force of his arms alone. It would be impressive, and perhaps it is a little, if Adelis was anybody else. He is himself, however, and the look on his face flattens out somewhat as Otegine perches high up...and promptly offers a hand.
Rude.
Just for that, Adelis walks up, yes, but he certainly doesn't take the offer of help. Instead he reaches up, and with a surprising speed for somebody wearing a pair of 3 inch heels, promptly scales the trunk with utter minimal difficulty. Climbing higher than Otegine's resting form, he then takes a seat on the thickest part of the branch, peering down with no shift in expression. ]
Did you say something.
no subject
[If Adelis is expecting annoyance, he's not getting it. Otegine is openly, almost boyishly impressed.]
Adelis, you did that so fast! That was awesome!
no subject
Well. Otegine's a simple man, he supposes. ]
I'd have been out of a job bloody ages ago if I couldn't climb a simple tree.
[ At the very least, he's comfortable where he is.... ]
1/2
[sugoi...
He gives a breathless little smile up to Adelis, cocking his head to the side as he adjusts his weight.] See, and I wouldn't gotten to see that if we chose something smaller, ri--
2/2
Otegine gets little more than an exclamation out before the entire bottom bough, already a little too worn to support him for long, snaps cleanly from the tree.
Down he goes with a yelp.]
