And he duly takes the sandwich and bites into it when told, then washes it down with a sip.

After a second, he nods. ]

That's lovely. [ He gets the appeal now! ] Is everything you brought today meant to pair with white wine?

Yes, I thought that if we were to have a picnic, we should at least enjoy ourselves with good food.

[ He pours himself a glass of wine as well before setting the bottle down. He reaches in the basket to pull out a small paper plate full of cheese. ]

Help yourself to as much as you like.

[ Don't mind if he does! He begins to take bits here and there, a sip of wine between each portion.

After a moment, he speaks up. ]

To be honest with you, Kaeya, I'm genuinely impressed. [ He smiles. ] You put a lot of thought and effort into this.

[ He's...honestly kind of touched. ]

[ Kaeya watches as Trahearne enjoys himself, pleased that the other seems to like what he brought. A smile is stretched across Kaeya's face. ]

Of course. I should put no less effort for a romantic date, shouldn't I?

[ Just going to come right out and call this a date because that's what it is, right? All of these bingo squares intend to be dates. ]

[ Aaand he's still not used to hearing things he does with others be called "dates," much less when he's involved. His smile grows sheepish, and a faint gold hue tinges his cheeks. ]

I appreciate it. I really do.

[ Maybe he should have done a bit more than homemade worms and some snacks from the store...

Sorry. Give him a second. He quickly buries his face in his wine glass. ]

[ They're delicious worms at least! ]

So, Trahearne, tell me more about yourself. What are your likes, dislikes?

[ The information is in the pamphlets but he'd rather hear it from the man himself. ]

[ There's another thing he's not good at--talking about himself. ]

I...like reading. [ is that the right answer. ] I enjoy moments like this--ones where I can simply think, or talk.

But to be honest, I'm more interested in learning about you.

[ Anything to stop talking about himself... But also, Kaeya intrigues him. He likes him, even--he wouldn't be spending this much time with him if he didn't. ]

[ Kaeya takes a sip of his wine, smiling. ]

What do you like to do when you have a moment to yourself, without the weight of responsibility or expectation on you?

I normally enjoy a drink at the local tavern, but I enjoy the typical TCG as well. Are you familiar with any?

[ That is not a familiar abbreviation. Trahearne eyes Kaeya curiously. ]

I can't say I am. I don't know what that is.

It's short for Trading Card Game. We have one in my world that's recently become popular.

[ and as soon as i regain back a bunch of cards for kaeya, he's going to spread the joy ]

Perhaps you'd enjoy it. It's a game based completely on strategy and besting your opponent.

That does sound intriguing. [ Huh. ] I think I would.

[ How did Kaeya know...

He takes a large sip of his wine, finishing the glass. ]

Do you like the strategy, then? Is it like chess?

[ He thinks a knight captain would like strategy. ]

[ And Kaeya will pour him another glass! They're not going to stop drinking until they finish the bottle. Kaeya isn't a lightweight at all, being the alcoholic that he is, so it won't be enough to make him tipsy. Will it make Trahearne...? ]

Yes, you could say that it's very much like a game of chess. If you're interested in chess, then I'd definitely be willing to play a match against you.

[ It will probably make him tipsy! He is not much of a drinker. But he's not going to turn down a second glass. ]

I would! I can't say I've had much time to play in the past, but I do enjoy it. [ He gestures with his full glass towards Kaeya again. ] I'd like to see what strategies the mind of captain comes up with.

[ Purely professional. ]

[ Kaeya will save the rest of the wine for Trahearne, just to be nice! But also to see him tipsy ehehehehe. ]

And I'd be interested in peeking into the mind of a marshal's. [ He tips his glass towards Trahearne as well. ] You must have quite the accomplishments to reach such a rank.

[ He takes a sip, his eyes darting to the side sheepishly. ]

I don't know. I doubt I am the soldier you think me to be. [ He doesn't want to get Kaeya's hopes up? ] I simply happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right expertise.

[ A pause, another sip. ]

You should speak with my second-in-command, Commander Syrlya--he's here, you know. I would say he's the one with the accomplishments.

[calla]

You should give yourself more credit. You certainly wouldn't have gotten your rank without accomplishments that others would have recognized.

[ Kaeya is going to boost up that self-esteem!! That's what bros do :) ]

But I'll have to seek this commander out, especially if you speak of him so highly.

[ Trahearne seems to smile a little wider at the compliment. It is genuinely appreciated. He always thinks he will never be as great as he actually is, but things like this do make him happy.

Not as happy as talking about Syrlya, though. ]

You should. He's quite skilled and talented, and has done more for Tyria than either of us could ever imagine. I think you would like him. [ A beat. ] He's sylvari like me--you'll know him when you see him.

You seem quite fond of him.

Trahearne glazes over that part, though. ]

Not as long as I'd like. [ HUH?? ] He was a sapling when we first met. I always knew he was destined for great things, but I had no idea how much of an impact he would have on my--on all our lives.

[ stop him before he sits here for the rest of the picnic talking about Syrlya. He takes a happy sip of his wine... ]

Then it's quite fortunate that you're both here. If you ask him out, he wouldn't think twice - what, with this bingo card and all.

[ Whatever train of thought he had, it comes to a sudden halt. No, it vanishes all together. He was just happy talking about Syrlya. Where did asking him out come into play? What does his bingo have to do with anything?! ]

Well, now you don't need an excuse to spend more time with him.

[ He rephrases but in a more PG way :) ]

[ There is a lengthy pause as Trahearne registers all that, punctuated by him finishing off his second glass of wine. Hmm, that was quick. Is the gold flush on his face from the alcohol, or the thought of "spending time" with the commander? Hard to tell. ]

I hardly needed an excuse to begin with, but yes--the cards offer some good suggestions for activities.

[ He turns to look at Kaeya again, his glass reachable. He won't turn down a refill. ]
