prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

Gaku unceremoniously drops the wood onto the ground. ]

[Anyway, thanks for the wood. He agreed to show Gaku how to light a fire, but in truth:]

You'll have to forgive me for not bringing flint and steel.

...How else are you going to light it?

[ He can't stand you people with magic. ]

[With magic, of course. Holding onto one of those wood pieces and channeling Pyro into it, it quickly bursts into flame. He nestles it among the others to get a larger fire started.]

Before you fuss, I'm a man of my word. There should be flint and steel at the grocer's, so I'll show you how to start one on your own another time.

[ What the hell.. this is the first time he's seen anything like this ever, so please don't mind him as his eyes go wide when the piece of wood suddenly bursts into flames. ]

Thanks. I appreciate it. I'll come find you as soon as I've got that.

[Gaku's reaction is far from surprising, but now that he's settled beside him, he might notice that Diluc is nice and warm. He doesn't radiate heat like the campfire does, but there's a reason why Kaeya is constantly bitching about him melting his ice bridges.]

I take it you'd like to learn other survival skills as well? Starting a fire is one thing, but you're not going to last long if you don't know how to fend for yourself.

[ Yeah, Diluc sure is ~~hot~~ warm. ]

I would. I've run into some things back home that require self defense skills, so if you have those too, I'd be willing to learn.

I do, but I can't promise you'll return home unmarred. The best way to learn self-defense skills are through practice, after all.

[And uh, again, Gaku seems like the kind of dude who gives many damns about his pretty face!! So is he certain he wants to learn?]

[That's what he thought, pretty boy. Diluc nods, rising to stand and dust himself off and move away from the flames.]

Alright. In that case, try to punch me.

[Oh. Learning starts now, apparently.]

[ Gaku meanwhile just... stares at him. ]

Right now? You need to give me some warning before asking for that?

[Congratulations, Gaku: you met Diluc's expectations, or rather the total lack of them. While he's up, he sets his coat down, the one he'd bundled up all their provisions in, and begins sorting their items inside the tent.]

Will your assailant give you any warning before they attack you? If you aren't prepared at a moment's notice, you'll suffer the consequences.

[Now think fast, Gaku. Diluc (gently!) lobs a towel at the back of his head.]

According to the map, there's a hot spring just west of camp. We've worked up a sweat getting up here, so unless you want to risk getting ill by sleeping in your dirty clothes, we should take advantage of it.

Anyway, Gaku freezes when the towel hits the back of his head, but he grabs it before it falls to the ground. ]

Good plan. It’s been a long time since I’ve gone to one.

[ And he’ll start following Diluc once he heads in that direction. ]

So if I want to be prepared, I need to practice enough that it’ll be second nature, right?

It doesn't appear that Gaku has brought a change of clothes with him to the hot spring, but that's lesson number one of fending for yourself: be prepared. Some lessons are best learnt the hard way and Diluc is far from a lenient teacher, so after grabbing another towel and a change of clothes, he guides them to the hot spring.]

More or less. Many survival skills are reflexive, so if you don't want to be caught unaware, you'll need to train your reflexes just as you would any other skill.

[They arrive at the hot spring, and after testing the water (could be hotter, he'll fix that), Diluc starts stripping out of his clothes. Something something big dick, don't get intimidated, Gaku. Diluc's body is also pretty heavily scarred, but that's not as shocking as Diluc Jr.]

[ Speaking of being caught unaware... Gaku really should have brought a change of clothes, but he can't despair over that when he has to face something else much more prominent.

Of course he notices. How could he not? But Gaku is at least somewhat polite when he's around people he doesn't know all too well, so he decides not to comment on the very large elephant trunk in the room... or spring, more like.

Ahem. ]

It's been a while since I've been to a hot spring.

[ Gaku disrobes too, his pristine skin in sharp contrast to Diluc's, yet fitting of what's required for an idol. He's well-built too, solid with a light six pack, yet lacking any serious bulk to his frame. He wastes no time getting into the water, eager to let that heat overtake him. ]

[Gaku gets a cursory once over as well, but in Diluc's eyes, there isn't much worth remarking on. He has the physique of a man who works out simply to look good, but he's an idol, isn't he? That much makes sense.

Regardless, Diluc isn't the one with the complicated feelings here, so he'll join Gaku in the water soon enough. But first, he's taking his hair down to tie it up in a higher pony so it doesn't get too terribly wet. He eases into the water across from Gaku, and immediately, the water heats up.]

Indeed. They're rare where I hail from, so any opportunity to indulge is one I'll take.

[ HE'S NOT HAVING COMPLICATED FEELINGS!!!!

When the water heats up even more, he can't help but fan himself. What the hell. ]

It's a bit of a drive for us to get to one, so it's not very often that I get to go.

[ Combine distance with lack of time and there you go. Gaku looks at Diluc, his eyes narrowing. ]

Your hair up higher looks nice.

[ This is an observation and not a compliment. ]

[A drive? Diluc supposes he means by carriage, although Gaku's manner of dress suggests that... no, maybe not? But Diluc only speaks horse, so moving on. About his hair...]

Thank you. [THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT, BRO.] These days, I only wear it up while bartending or for social functions. It gets in the way too easily otherwise.

[Brushing hair out of his face when he's torturing abyss mages is a bit inconvenient.]

I myself don't drink, so I don't have a preference. As far as what I'll mix, it depends entirely on the guest. So long as they enjoy it in moderation, I'll gladly make any drink on the menu.

[His gaze settles deeply on Gaku as if examining him, or... no, it's more like Diluc is gazing straight through him.]

What's your usual order? Perhaps I can make it for you if the bar here is adequately stocked.

[ Huh. A bartender that doesn't drink. He wonders if it's like people who work at restaurants getting tired of the food... not like Gaku could ever relate. ]

I don't have a usual. I don't really drink, since it wouldn't be good for my image.

[ Now, he does with other groups from time to time, but that's entirely in private (ignoring that one time on a show that doesn't count). ]

[Diluc nods— it only makes sense that an idol would forego alcohol, and he can appreciate someone who either abstains or drinks in moderation. On this day at this time centralized in this hot spring, Gaku has graduated from Useless to Slightly Less Useless.]

Right. You have to be careful how you conduct yourself in public, don't you? That must be exhausting.

[He says as if Diluc doesn't have to carry himself a certain way in public as well, but he isn't in front of crowds of hundreds or thousands, so he'd consider that a bit different.]

[ Wow, so proud of Gaku...

He shrugs. ]

It can be, but you get used to it after a while. My dad owns the production studio we used to be under, so I've been training for this my whole life.

[ Which Gaku has a lot of Issues from, but that's neither here nor there. He loves his group and his career now, and the present and future is what matters most to him. ]

I see. So you've been held to a high standard ever since you were a boy.

[Spoken more like an assertion of fact than a question, because again, Diluc Gets It. Being a child of noble lineage carries a similar weight. Leaning back, Diluc drapes his arms over the spring's cobbled edge.]

It's not easy growing up with all that pressure bearing down on you. You're a strong man, Gaku.
