prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

I'm the leader of a group named TRIGGER. Ever heard of them?

[Goro would love to talk about himself if he thought he were worth talking about, and to some extent will do it anyway because he is simply incapable of shutting the fuck up. Just wait until he starts trauma dumping in the middle of a public cafe or bathhouse, Gaku.]

Ah, yes, I suppose so. [To his credit, once Gaku moves away he does seem to relax, if only in fractions, and he ponders the question. TRIGGER..., there's absolutely no recognition of the word in conjunction with a group, and to emphasize that:] Have they something to do with guns?

[ Can't wait for the trauma dumping!

Ah, yeah. Seems like he really doesn't know. For now, Gaku won't think about the implications of Goro not recognizing TRIGGER, and that string of psychotic breakdowns being news to him. ]

Sort of. We're an idol group. The idea is that our performances are explosive, like when you pull the trigger on a gun.

[Give him time to decide he likes talking to you.]

[Goro will gladly join him in not thinking about the implications-- they're certainly there, glaringly given they're from the same city. It's either a time issue or a whole realm issue, and the concept of there being a second Tokyo in modern enough times that they dress reasonably similarly enough, that the SIU and idol groups are both present, but they aren't aware of each other..., The mere suggestion there could be another Goro Akechi in Gaku's Tokyo makes his skin crawl.]

[But he's not thinking about it!!]

[The idea of an idol group named for explosive performance, called TRIGGER, brings a wry smile to Goro's face, and he makes his left hand into the shape of a pistol, dropping the "butt" of it into his open other palm.] Bang, like a recoil. That's clever.

[ He smiles a little bit. ]

Glad you think so. Too bad I can't show you one of our shows. I think you'd see exactly what I mean.

[ Maybe??? He isn't so sure that Goro is well versed in pop culture, but you never know. ]

[He was, as part of his faux-celebrity, but it wasn't like he actually cared about most of it. He smiles, shrugging his shoulders.] Unfortunate, but I'll just have to take your word for it.

[He doesn't actually care overmuch, but he figures he may have obliged him if the opportunity had presented itself.]

[ He would not have had a choice. ]

Yeah, you will. Maybe I'll get my phone working again sometime and I can show you anyway.

[ Little does he know there's no internet. ]

[They can go insane without internet together, though Goro’s will have very little to do with his inability to watch TRIGGER perform. He chuckles.] That would be preferable, but I feel like it doesn’t look promising given the look of things here.

Don't make me think about that.

[ Please!!! He'll anxiously think about all of the text messages and industry news he's missing. ]

The most advanced thing in my house is the television, and that looks old. The appliances aren't new brands either.

[ And he would know. He pays a lot of attention to that sort of thing—a result of being raised by a very picky man. ]

[Akechi grimaces slightly, shaking his head.]

I'm not especially familiar with appliances, new or brands or otherwise, but... [He looks outward toward the mountains where his farm is, still grimacing.] I'm the sort who has lived on frozen dinners longer than I care to admit, so the projected change in lifestyle is quite steep, it appears.

I haven't lived off of frozen dinners, but I think it's safe to say both of our lifestyles are going to change.

[ He sighs, slow and worn out. ]

I don't really know how to repair leaks or anything, so that's going to be a lot to learn... I'm sure the house is going to leak the first time it rains.

[He's quiet, at first, looking thoughtful about repairing leaks, and bringing a hand to his mouth to tap the pads of his gloved fingers against his lower lip.]

As an educated guess, it can't be particularly dissimilar to dressing wounds, right? [That, at least, he's familiar with, though it's a bit out of left field to correlate it to fixing leaking roofs.]

[ Yeah, it sure is out of left field, because all Gaku can do is stare at Gorou for a long moment. ]

I guess it isn't... but I wouldn't be able to compare it to that either.

It’s a similar intent, to keep things out of an open area. I might be able to assist.

[Goro. Goro, you’re literally showing off how viscerally un-normal you are right now.]

...Is it really?

[ Because hello???? He's a little bit concerned?? ]

I guess I'll come find you if I need help fixing a leak.

It makes sense, really... If your roof leaks, you wind up with the elements inside your home. If you don't bandage a wound effectively, you wind up with dirt and debris in your wound, and likely a nasty infection.

[He should not be smiling while he says this like it's a completely normal thing to say.]

[ He really shouldn't be!! In fact, it causes Gaku's eyebrows to knit together in concern. ]

...You sound like you're used to treating wounds.

[Still smiling, he adjusts the wrists of his gloves, looking up a moment later as if he only just heard Gaku's statement.]

Hm? Oh, I am. Don't concern yourself with it, I'm fine. [Goro. Goro, your social ineptitude is showing again.]

[ It sure is, and Gaku almost grimaces. ]

Telling someone not to be concerned with something only makes them more concerned, you know.

Does it? [He sounds pretty sincerely unsettled, actually, but only for a moment before he smooths back over and laughs. The sound is... not especially genuine.] Apologies, I truly do mean for you to not worry about it. I'm familiar with my own first aid and have been since a young age, I like to think I'm rather good at it. [Goro that is not how you make someone stop worrying.]

[ Yeah... all of that just sounds like Goro attempting to backpedal, so Gaku sighs. ]

It's fine, but you do seem to be walking on eggshells. Don't worry about it so much.

[He is always attempting to backpedal, good catch. He swallows, resisting the urge to fuss with his collar, because it's warm suddenly, being Seen is a very uncomfortable experience.] I'm not worried. [A little too quickly, for sure.]

Isn't that what people who are worried say?

[ Gaku laughs, attempting to ease some of that palpable tension he can feel.

Being an idol means he's been trained in knowing when he should switch subjects, so— ]

Hey, why don't you show me your card?

[It's such a strangely amicable callout he can't be sure if it's a callout at all, so he just makes an uncertain sound that isn't quite a word. He doesn't recover enough to refuse the question, producing his card for lack of anything better to respond with, tongue too thick in his mouth.]

[ He's used to people being tongue-tied around him, so he doesn't even comment on it as he takes the card, bringing out his own to compare them.

...He'll just be carefully glancing away from those obedience and costume squares...

One square does stick out to him, however. ]
