prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

Ryuki listens along like a good boy, letting Zhongli's answer digest. He's normal enough to understand that the answer is pretty sound, and he's from a series philosophical enough to accept it... and also self-aware enough to understand that a city boy isn't just going to expect eternal happiness on a farm with no wifi. ]

Memories. [ He says that, a little bit distantly. ] Sometimes, it's a lot... if there's enough good memories to outweigh the bad stuff, then, yeah...

[ As for the very last part of Zhongli's spiel, though, at that point, Ryuki's lost him. ]

So... basically, you're saying you hope you'll get lucky?

[lapidation]

[ (lowe voice) i love meta series ]

I would be asking the opposite. A future that isn't only bleak and without happiness.

[ Really, Zhongli said he wishes to never get permanent depression in the most convoluted and confusing way possible. ]

[ The meta is separate from Ryuki getting punked, he's just unlucky.

He stares at Zhongli like he's said something a bit in a foreign language, eyes distant. Future, he doesn't like thinking about that very much. ]

What are your hobbies, Mr. Zhongli?

[ well, he can tell someone is deflecting, so he's going to let it go.

Taking in the sights. Eating at restaurants. It's pleasant to find new places to dine.

[ Buying expensive shit is also a hobby, but he isn't aware that it's considered expensive. ]

[ Get a better grasp on finances you God of Dink. ]

Oh, that sounds nice. I don't find new places too often, but it's more just because there's a couple places I like already. If I don't know where to spend my money, better to spend it on what you already like, right?

Have you found a nice place to eat here yet?

[ Rural places have nice restaurants in a different way -- homely... or so he thinks, in general at least. ]

There's a nod, understanding. ]

It's good to have a few usual places. [ He looks at the map in the pamphlet when the question crops up. ] I haven't, but I do plan to pay the establishments here a visit.

Would you care to join me, Ryuki? We could perhaps find something comfortable together.

[ Unbearable. Ryuki is also a well off guy and he still knows how much things should cost. ]

Whatever responsibilities I had as a consultant is on pause while I'm away. I wouldn't call getting myself situated "busy." [ Hmmm. Zhongli glances at the map again and... He tilts his head. ] There isn't a lot of variety.

[ There is just one bar. ]

Do you work at a firm?

[ Misread that as 'there is a lot of variety' and thought we were having another there's three fish in there you dumb bitch moment. ]

...Well, it's better than nothing. Do you like drinking, Mr. Zhongli?

[lapidation]

Currently, a funeral parlor.

[ Not as nice. STOP.... THAT WAS MY EXTRA CREDIT TASK.

There's a nod. ]

While not a hobby of mine, I do like sampling liquor. [ Some are good, some are bad. Won't know till you sip. ] Shall we?

[ Oh... that kind of consulting. ]

I have a lot of respect for the job.

[ Sincerely, and rather soberly. Which is a state he struggles to be in, typically. He shrugs this off fast, though. The less wallowing, the better. ]

Yeah, let's go. As weird as it is, at least it's nice weather... good to walk in.

[ Less wallowing, though Zhongli doesn't see his job as being a sad one, per se. The bar isn't too far, so they get there pretty quickly. Small island. ]

The island is quaint, though I wonder about its oddities.

[ Like having an alleged goddess isn't one? When they're there, the barkeep tells them they can choose a table inside or outside. Do whatever. ]

[ It's been years. It's not like a festering wound, but more like a sore that gnaws every transition from winter to spring. ]

Well, it's definitely not in Japan, at least, I'm pretty sure. I don't think the flora and climate are really anywhere I know.

[ He just. At this current point he's just glossed over the whole goddess thing, because he knows at least two women who would love to be called goddess, so he just thinks this is a thing women-presenting folk like to do I guess.

Well, since it's to sight-see, we may as well pick outside. ]

Where are you from? If you don't mind me asking... I'm from Tokyo.

[lapidation]

[ PAIN DULLS IN TIME. Zhongli tilts his head when he mentions Japan because he has never heard of that place before, but they can get seated and look at the menu of bar food and draft beers. ]

It's likely you have never heard of it. [ He orders something and an appetizer to start. ] I'm from Liyue Harbor.

[ Does it though? Looks at smudged writing on hand.

He seems interested in the mundane conversation, at least. ]

Wow -- no, I haven't. [ "I can't help you there, tiger. I can't search up anything."" ] Is it somewhere in China? A harbor sounds nice. I don't live in the Minato District, but Tokyo as a whole is pretty close to the sea, all things considered.

[ Multiple worlds talk is here as mundane as that is!! ]

I don't believe China is one of our seven nations. [ These names sound familiar to his ear, but he doesn't remember any Tokyo or Minato District. ] You said you're from Tokyo, Japan? Minato district sounds like it could be a part of Inazuma which is another nation in my world. It's made of many islands and governed by the Electro Archon, the Raiden Shogun.

[ Fantasy JAPAN. ]

[ Everything else Zhongli just said to him sounds like nonsense so he just. Please clarify the one place he can kind of get a footing on. ]

We're governed....... by a prime minister, not a shogun.

[ That is a look you have Ryuki. ]

I see. [ Prime Minister sounds very mortal. ] I'm guessing the Prime Minister is your god?

[ This is a genuine question. ]

[ Help? He'd proffer some history lessons and talk about the emperor but I, me, I don't want to, and it's irrelevant in modern Japan so. ]

[ Thinks about politicians and admirable being used in the same sentence.

SOU SEJIMA (DEROGATORY) ]

Um, well. Yeah. The prime minister definitely isn't a god of any sort, and I don't think anyone thinks of them like that. It's democracy, so the leader is "one of us".

[ Arguments about how politics is effectively largely nepotism and connections aside, that's getting too deep. ]

[ Zhongli does generally mean the concept. ]

As it may come to you as expected or a surprise, Teyvat's nations are founded and normally governed by gods. There are councils that were chosen by the people, but most of them still serve their archon.

[ Will Ryuki continue to think that he's larping. Fortunately, their food comes in!

He got them... Fried chicken. ]

[ Not like this. He receives his chicken and stares into it and the draft beer like a haunted man, surrounded by LARPers.

No, he's rationalising it actually. There's plenty of nations that still follow a religious structure in their governance, and it would be remiss of him to dismiss that. He nods half heartedly. ]

Right... I'm sorry, I don't think I've ever heard of Teyvat, then.
