prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

[ After the initial rush of announcements, Noé decides to explore the town and library ends up being the first stop. Walking along the bookshelves without a purpose, he notices the recipe books. Having absolutely no skills when it comes to cooking, learning at least one recipe sounds more important than learning all the local myths. If someone happens to be around, he'll walk up to them with the recipe book open on the recipe for pancakes. ]

Are these really that easy to make?

[ The recipe says it is, but he literally has no idea if that's true... which speaks volumes about his cooking experience. ]

( II: Task board )

[ Standing in front of the task board, Noé's looking through tasks. It's going great, until he sees a word he doesn't understand at all. ]

Excuse me, what does it mean?

[ He's pointing at one of the following: LOLs, XDDDD, or gacha. ]

[ Being stationeryless is suffering which is why Noé might be found once again near the task board, waiting for someone else to come to ask them for advice. ]

Do you have this small box in your house? I pressed a button and now it keeps showing moving images...

[ He looks really concerned while explaining the situation. ]

[ Kaspar seeks refuge from the sun early on before he thinks about braving the crowd again. Ah, but he's happy to have found the library, only to get interrupted before he can look for the fantasy section.

But he does his best seriously consider the recipe and the question. It does look simple enough, but trying it is the only way he knows to be sure.

He almost sounds conspiratorial, with one gloved hand on his chin. ] ... want to try making it?

Y-Yeah.

[ At first, he's not even sure why did he stutter. It becomes apparent a few moments later, when he realizes that the scent of blood fills the room and he doesn't even see any marks or stains. ]

But I can't cook at all. So I need to start with something really easy... I don't want to waste food.

[bluminescence]

[ He might be smelling the daggers he still keeps on him, the bullet case, and the pistol at his hip. Even though Kaspar can't sense them like usual, they're still all weapons crafted with blood.

Kaspar is only leaned over to study this recipe, with helpful drawings, before nodding. He sounds pretty confident for having such a run down kitchen.

They're taking this book with them too, that's how libraries work, right? ]

... It's easy, I think.

[ All smiles, motioning for him to follow. Sorry, he's happy to have a goal to accomplish. To the grocery store? ]

[ Kas' confidence makes an impression on Noé, to be quite honest. If he says that it's easy, even with that slightly quieter I think, then it must be easy, period. Holding the recipe book like it's a precious thing, the vampire follows Kaspar right away, still slightly dazed from the scent. ]

We need flour, salt, milk, vegetable oil, sugar, and butter. I think they have most of these at the grocery store.

[ If they don't... they'll have to make do. ]

[ Kaspar nods and tosses Noé a grateful smile as he holds the library door for him. He knows little about many of the ingredients he just read off. It's fine... there are labels? But first, with a look over the way he's holding that book and following so readily, Kaspar makes a simple guess-- ]

... are you really hungry?

[Syrlya stops, of course, since Noé has 'question' written on his face.] A... small box?

It's... this big.

[ Using his hands, he forms a shape of a cube in the air, hoping that this will help Syrlya identify the item he's talking about. ]

It keeps showing people holding hands and kissing most of the time.

[Syrlya stares blankly.]

Does pressing the same button not turn it off?

I have no idea. [He shrugs.. There are a lot of box shaped things in the world.] I just thought what you pressed must be some sort of on-off switch.

[ and a tilt of her head to one side as she frowns at it. the change of perspective does so little to help and yet it does not stop her. ]

Or it does but then the rest kind of ruin it.

[ As soon as Uta says that it looks like a face, Noé does the exact same thing and tilts his head to one side to see it with his own eyes. ]

So the letter 'X' would be... the eyes? And 'D' would be the mouth. But I don't know anyone with so many mouths...

[ He's so confused. ]

[ they can both be confused together as they try to understand emojis. though there's probably no help for them with "LOLs". heaven knows if they'll get "gacha" as well. ]

Yeah, that's what I think, and I haven't seen anyone with that many mouths either.

I've heard of Fishman who have multiple rows of teeth but this isn't the same.

[ The longer he stares at the words (?), the less he understands. None of them make sense, but maybe they should think outside of the box...! ]

What if this is some kind of code? 'X̅D' is a roman numeral for ten thousands and five hundred. [ A pen would be a godsent now, alas. He's going to draw a line above the 'X' sign on the note pinned to the task board. ] But I'm not sure what the additional Ds are for. 'LOL's might be similar in that regard since 'L' stands for fifty...

[ He's definitely giving it too much thought. ]

[ thinking outside of the box is good!!! but maybe....this is a bit too far out of the box? uta's going to question it because does it make sense with the rest of the context?? ]

Do you think it's really that complicated? Judging from what else was written it seems like it would have been something much more simpler than that.

[ There might be a lot to do on the farm, yet Noé decides to explore the island anyway. A day or two shouldn't make much difference when it comes to pulling weeds or smashing the rocks, and he doesn't even have any seeds anyway. After making sure that he's equipped with a hammer, his only weapon against whatever might come after him, Noé sets off. Getting to the mountain area and climbing all the way the the mountain top takes a couple of hours. As soon as he realizes that there's a frozen lake here, his eyes sparkle.

It seems frozen solid, but there's always a risk that it might break. While Noé's thinking about trying to step onto the ice sheet, he notices someone nearby. ]

Hello! Do you live here?

[ As far as he knows (and he read the pamphlet thoroughly), there are farms in the mountains. ]

[ He Xuan isn't exactly against hanging around in the cold, not when potentially canvassing the entirety of the land gives him a better idea of where everything is...as in, like, a just-in-case he needs to absolutely know where everything is. He may look sulky, but he is more than someone who simply sits in shadows; he's an opportunist.

Anyway, hence is why he's around here despite his farm being over at the beach... ]

...No. Not my type of place, for the most part.

[ The water is frozen, after all. ]

What are you doing here? Going to walk across the lake?

[ Does that mean that there is a part that he might like? Despite the cold, the scenery is quite nice, even if no crops would grow in these conditions. Since when he started thinking like a farmer, though...? ]

I'm here for this. [ He holds up the pamhplet with great care before putting it back in the pocket of his coat. ] I figured that ice skating can only be done here...

[ He's definitely very practical. ]

I wonder if it'll count if I do it alone, though.

Maybe Noe will think it means he just likes water, which is fine with him. ]

Coincidentally, I have a square to fill out on mine as well. These seem to also be meant to be done with one other person, so we may as well get it over with and do it with each other.

[ ... He sounds logical, but also so frank. Anyway, he has probably (definitely) never ice-skated before, but he thinks that they can like, improvise if necessary?? ]
