[ where are you right now? are you simply wandering around the island in no particular place? well, for those near the beach you can find a small calico cat who seems rather skittish and may be running away from a dog. fortunately, the dog doesn't seem to be chasing after the cat with any bloodlust but more like following her around? what is happening here?
or maybe you are having a meal when this small calico walks up to you and meows exactly once before sitting politely at your feet. or maybe you're just somewhere on the island in general when you stumble upon her. ]

[ because i refuse to believe that there is not a single bench on this entire island, uta will be outside sitting on one of them while flipping through a book with a title that seems... questionable or exciting depending on your taste in reading material. for uta, however, she'll questioning the novel she received with the proud title of My Boyfriend Is The One Except He’s A Lizard And Father Doesn’t Approve on its cover and spine. can't forget what you're reading, after all.
why is she reading this book outside where god and everyone can see her questionable taste? simple. if she must suffer, she will not go down alone—would be the answer if she was petty. the truth is that she's hoping to pawn it off to someone (anyone) else who finds the faintest interest in it. ]

[ since it has been a bit since they've all arrived, uta will be checking out the boutique's offerings to see if she can't find something to change up her wardrobe. farmcore has never been her thing, but wearing an all-white dress with a short skirt is definitely not practical. that said, she will be posing in front of a mirror in some new clothes which still aren't great for farming before going to change into something else that is a lot more reasonable.
perhaps it's interesting that regardless whatever she is trying on, she'll have a particular straw hat on her head in exchange for the headphones. ]

[ if you'd like pick a square from her card here and we can go. ]

[He may know basically nothing about teenage girls but hes PRETTY sure they don't like those things.]

What's European literature like? Is it colorful? I've read all kinds of books, so I'm curious to know what your world writes about.
[ and before he gets a chance to respond: ]
What kind of scale models do you make? I believe that the most common scale models are ships, right?
no subject
Europe has an expansive literary history, so it would be most prudent to say that there are books for most any tastes. While I spend most of my time occupied with work, I try to make some time to read a novel now and again. Recently, in England in particular, stories of a fairly grotesque nature have been in vogue, though.
And I make scale models of crime scenes so that I can more easily reference the details of a case whrn I am working on it in my office, rather than having to repeatedly return to the scene.
no subject
Grotesque in nature how, and then what kind of novels do you prefer? I'm fond of stories about adventurers going on grand explorations and reading about all the things that they come across.
[ because of certain reasons that he'll probably never learn. ]
But that's pretty clever and certainly does seem like it would save on a lot of time. [ though it begs the question of how fast he has some of those readily available. ] I suppose then that's to assume that they're incredibly detailed as well?
no subject
They're accurate though I would hesitate to say detailed. They are as detailed as they need to be.
[And he probably could have staff make them but he's too finicky snd thus can't leave the job to someone else what if they do it wrong??? Anyway.]
Grotesque as in full of monsters both fantastical and lurking in the hearts of men. Recently, I had read where a vampire is inadvertently brought to England where he preys on young women until the protagonists manage to slay him.
[Dracula was published in 1897 :)]
But both adventure novels and non-fictional explorers accounts are both quite common as well. You might enjoy Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days.
no subject
Vampires, huh? [ she'll let out a small hum as she mulls it over. tragically one piece world knows about vampires and uta is wondering how much overlap they have. funny that they both have this concept. ] I'd be interested in reading that even if sounds like it might go over my head, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
[ since they sound like fancier vampires? it also could be how he speaks and that's also perfectly acceptable. though what gets her attention, truly, is the book about verne because of obvious reasons. ]
Around the World in Eighty Days? Which one is that? A non-fiction or a pure adventure story?
no subject
[Who's to say what the young people like.]
no subject
I wouldn't be opposed at something more grounded, however, was the part where you can travel your world in eighty days was the part that was fantastical?
no subject
I do not know if it's been done, but there is nothing fundamentally unreasonable about the voyage as described, so I suppose it could be done.
no subject
[ looks into the camera about the manga's pacing and ignores things. ]
no subject
No? And why is that?
no subject
It'd just be impossible. I'm not a navigator and I don't understand much of it, but simply traveling from island to island could take days to even months if someone isn't careful.
no subject
... Is your entire world just islands?
no subject
Almost entirely. There a single landmass known as the Red Line that cuts my world in half. It's the man reason why no one can travel around it in such a short period of time.
no subject
Like a ring of solid land? That's... an exceedingly strange topography, but I suppose I've heard stranger things here.
no subject
Right! I think the word is "continent". Some of the places that have been described to me seem so fascinating—even being in a place with all four seasons is exciting to me.
no subject
That-
[Does that mean she's not from an island that has all four??? Or has she not even heard of such a place???? He isn't mentally ready to ask that.]
It's pleasant, I suppose. Though by the end of each one you truly can't wait for it to be the next one.
no subject
and van zieks might not be ready for it but uta is ready to keep hammering this point in. ]
Is that so? Where I've grown up has only been like this if not a little bit warmer, so I'm excited to see what autumn and winter are going to be like. The clothes from winter islands look so cute.
no subject
[The first part of her comment would be easy to handle, some tropical islands only have warm weather after all. But then she says the rest.]
Winter islands...
[No, but polar regions would be like that, right? No... Surely there could still be Normal Islands as well.]
England is fairly mild in all its seasons, so I do wonder if the weather will be harsher here.
no subject
Yes, winter islands! I suppose you aren't familiar with that sort of thing, but then again, I'm not too familiar with the idea of changing seasons.
[ like as a concept she understands it but at the same time she has never lived in a place where this is something that happens. we get spring or summer for any extended period of time. ]
What does it mean to be "mild" in terms of seasons, exactly?
no subject
Mm, well we have winter, spring, summer, and autumn, but especially for how far north we are, the summers aren't as warm and our winters aren't as cold as they are in other places.
no subject
"How far north"... [ she repeats back slowly. ] So where you're positioned in your world affects the temperature and your seasons.
[ this sounds like a novel concept to her and it's in part because it is. maybe if she hadn't grown up in the new world things might have been a little bit different but alas. ]
no subject
I-Yes? Because-
[He opens his mouth to start explaining about the Earth's tilt but then decides he can't risk Uta replying with another wild fact about her weird world.]
In any case, since you were kind enough to listen to my troubles, would you like me to find some books you might enjoy at the library?
no subject
and uta will look at van zieks expectantly as he starts to respond but then cuts himself off. she has no idea why he would that and the fact that he doesn't elaborate and changes the topic instead is... well, she can bug him about it another time.
for now? ]
Yes! I'd love to read whatever books that you'd bring me. I'm curious to see what you're interested in!
no subject
I'll do my best to provide a good selection. But for now, please do excuse me.
