prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

[ Ellis grabs the eyes and throws them at the nearest cherry blossom tree, screaming with his hands holding the sides of his own head tightly.

His stabilization powers can't hold his emotions back. That's how intense it is. Ellis is absolutely freaking the hell out right now. ]

[ This is the first time he's ever heard Ellis make any sort of sound and it sets his nerves on edge. Or maybe it was the marbles that did it, their staring right up from Ellis' lap. Whatever it was, Gaku finds himself frozen for several seconds, unable to react.

What does he do? What should he do?

Looking between the marbles now rolling away from a nearby cherry blossom tree and Ellis, he eventually snaps out of his indecision and pulls Ellis close, his hand pressing on the back of his head to bury Ellis' face against his shoulder. ]

Well, maybe some time. It's not like we're seriously going to be here for the rest of our entire lives...

[ Surely. Even if he has to farm the goddamn Garden of Eden to get there. ]

There's a lot more cafes. And a lot of nice parks.

[ They have to think about that for a few moments. ]

I'm not bad at baking. [ ... ] I'm also not bad at making risotto.

Not bad? Or are you actually good at it?

[ He needs to set his expectations somewhere, Mira! ]

[ He clings onto Gaku as if he's the last lifeline for him to stay sane. The cherry blossoms blow, but the accursed things stay right there, far away from Ellis. Ellis doesn't cry, but he's close to hyperventilating. He doesn't speak much, so his throat feels raw after that initial scream. Loud whimpers come from him, since he really doesn't know volume control. How could he, when he's been deaf all his life? ]

[ Gaku!! Don't make them recognize they're good at something!! ]

... I don't think it's anything special, but those I've cooked for said it was delicious.

[ Gaku wraps his other arm around Ellis, his hand rubbing up and down along his back. He's not used to comforting people like this, but he'll certainly try. Hopefully his own even breathing can help Ellis calm down a little.

The volume of the whimpers don't bother him, though. This is something Ellis clearly needs to let out, so he can do it all he likes. ]

[ What the hell, Mira? Gaku glares at them. ]

Say you're good at it then.

[ ........... ]

F-fine. I'm good at it.

[ Admitting that? Painful. Save them, they're dying. ]

Well, alright, then. If you're amenable to it, then so am I.

[ She'll hold out her card for him to look at. She's not exactly thrilled about a lot of these, obviously, so she'll be upfront about which ones she's willing to try with a stranger. ]

How about feeding one of the animals? Seems simple enough.

[ They're really just doing this out in the field, huh? The cherry blossoms continue to sway with the occasional wind.

Ellis isn't supposed to feel safe with anyone, but the way he's hugged makes him believe for a split second that he could be safe.

...

He buries his face into Gaku's shoulder even more. ]

[ They sure are! But Gaku isn’t an idol here, so he doesn’t really care.

He’s blunt and not very good with words, so it’s a good thing that he doesn’t feel like he needs to say anything at all right now. All Gaku does is rub his back, his motion slightly slower in an attempt to further calm him.

He keeps his hand on the back of Ellis’ head, his thumb rubbing small circles. It’s a new sort of way to comfort someone that he isn’t familiar with, but he figures he’ll give it a shot. ]

[ There’s no saving them here. ]

Good! That’s what I like to hear.

[blankpoint]

[ Have mercy on them, they're a Capricorn.

Mira lets out a little huff, cheeks pink as they look away. ]

I get the feeling you're not a fan of people selling themselves short.

[ Makoto blinks at her efforts as he leans to pick what he can around him. Any ounce of annoyance at getting smacked in the face dries up.

His lip is noticeably red now, in one distinct spot. But whether from her hat or his own teeth in surprise is unclear. ]

Oh, I'm fine. Thank you.

[ He says as he adds what she hands him onto the neat pile before closing his book to rest his elbow on it. ]

But you're new, right? Are you settling in okay?

Huh, what kind of saying is that?

[ Makoto asks as he moves on to the next weed and the one after that, hands distracted and disarming his words to some degree. There is still an edge there, like he half expects the comparison to be a derogatory one. But Laurent being agreeable before helps keeps him from being too disgruntled.

He also hasn't noticed he's back to being the only one working. Then again, he certainly looks more productive with company. ]

[ Won't he be surprised at who regularly to-- it's a good thing Diluc doesn't mention his assessment.
His actual words have Makoto nodding. ]

You know what? You're right, Diluc. Either he helps and we get out of this together, or... it's not my problem anymore.

[ He looks back over, his expression even, resolute! ]

Is that the plan for yours too?

[pactmarshal]

[ are we supposed to stop???? ]

Yours. [ Small smile! ] If you don't mind. We're not exactly equipped to have others over quite yet.

[ There are leaks everywhere... ]

[pactmarshal]

[ Trahearne can't help but chuckle a little--his sarcastic optimism seemed to make M-21 even grumpier but it's all right. He doesn't really get what's so bad about it. For now.

The question draws his attention away from the TV entirely. ]

I am from a world called Tyria. We have quite sophisticated technology, especially due to the abundance of magic around us, but it seems we've evolved in different directions. [ He nods to the TV again. ] Our entertainment may not come in boxes, but we can travel quickly and efficiently with gates and waypoints.

[pactmarshal]

[ Hm, indeed. Trahearne narrows his eyes, staring hard at the librarian, trying to suss out what she means by that. ]

Any idea precisely when that might be?

[ "Soon! We'll be sure to send out a notice."

Which doesn't help.

After a beat, Trahearne turns to Zhongli with a sigh. ]

Farming books it is, then.

[pactmarshal]

I would like that.

[ He's getting the sense that Kaspar probably knows how to prepare worms... Trahearne does not. He never had the luxury of worms in Orr. ]

Shall we, then?

[ He nods back the way they came and sets off for the house. ]

[pactmarshal]

Ah-ha. I suppose not, then.

[ One learns something new about the flesh races every day! He smiles. ]

I'm eager to try this next flavour. Let's do this.

[ He steps forward and asks for another cone of mint chocolate chip. The vendor, too, seems pretty shocked that he like. ate the other serving so quickly. But Trahearne doesn't care :) ]

[bluminescence]

[ Then back they go, the wriggling a testament to Kaspar's strong hold on them. Worms. More reliable and hardier than most plants, fish, or insects, they were only one of many of the ways to survive underground.

Kaspar will try to head straight for the kitchen, whether Trahearne follows or not. Looking for a bowl... ]

[pactmarshal]

[ And then there is Trahearne, who will eat almost anything with little prompting, simply because it was the only way to survive in a land where little grew.

He watches as Kaspar flits around and eventually sets his worms down on the counter. They're pretty still... ]

Do you need any help?
