prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

[ After having met up with Gaku again some time after their tree climbing adventures, he invites him over to his home for dinner so that he can thank him for preventing his fall. Ellis also warned Gaku that he's not too good of a cook, but he knows how to do the basic things and prepare ingredients. As for why his home instead of anyone else's...

When Gaku arrives, he'll see that Ellis's house is... an actual house. Everything has been fixed. The field looks like it has different soil too, if he looks at it when passing by. The door is wide open so Gaku can come in whenever he wants. It smells like something is cooking though. Ellis is making something similar to korean steamed egg. It looks fluffier than a souffle. He has more ingredients in the refrigerator, waiting for Gaku to arrive so that he can cook with him.

His kitchen looks like it went through an upgrade and there are far better kitchen tools here than at other houses too. Looks like his bingo hunting was worth it. There are rugs, curtains, and all the things that make a house a home. Very cozy.

A candle sits on the dining table, unlit. There's a box of matches next to it. ]

[ Damn, Ellis has got it made... But then again, he'd been determined to get those bingo squares finished. It's certainly paid off.

Gaku strolls inside, figuring knocking on the doorframe wouldn't do much good in this situation. Sliding his shoes off, he whistles as he looks around. It's so cozy.

He's quick to find Ellis in the kitchen, waving to get his attention before saying anything. ]

Your place looks nice.

[ He sets down a bottle of wine and two long candles. Sure, Ellis already has one, but you can't go wrong with more mood lighting. ]

[ Good thing Gaku waved to get his attention, because Ellis might have whacked him with a frying pan otherwise out of surprise. He waves back with a grin on his face and gestures that he can get settled wherever he wants and there's stuff in the fridge that he can use. It's pretty full, so Gaku can choose whatever he wants to cook. ]

Now's a good time to treat you to my specialty.

[ Take a good guess at what he's making! He roots around for the ingredients, gathering them and setting them on the counter. ]

I don't know what kind of wine you like, so I just went with red. I know we don't need it, but I figured I might as well.

[ Ellis looks at the ingredients Gaku set on the counter and nods at him, thankful that Gaku brought the wine to make it seem more fancy. Ellis has never drunk alcohol before coming here, so he doesn't have preferences yet.

He looks over the ingredients again. Should he help prepare something? He wants to cook with Gaku, after all. ]

Mince the garlic and ginger for me.

[ He even jostles the bag that they're in so Ellis doesn't have to sift through everything.

While Ellis is doing that, Gaku will start heating up the stove. ]

[ Ellis gives Gaku a short salute before doing exactly what he asked for. There's a blender that does the mincing for him, so he puts them in there (separately) for the tool to do all the work. The loud noise from the blender never bothered him for obvious reasons. ]

[ The sound doesn't bother Gaku either, as he's become accustomed to loud noises. When the soba is just about cooked, he taps on Ellis's arm to get his attention. ]

Mix these together with the minced garlic and ginger and whisk it.

[ He points to the sesame oil, soy sauce, and chili paste. Then, he goes to take the noodles off the heat and rinse them. ]

[ Gaku has been doing good with getting Ellis's attention, and he nods, doing that exact thing Gaku told him to do. He's not the best, but he's being careful and gets decent results. When he's done, he taps Gaku's shoulder to get his attention to show what he's done. ]

Good work.

[ Not perfect, but it'll still be delicious.

Gaku puts some veggies in the skillet, letting them heat up just a bit. ]

Now cut up some of these.

[ He points to the green onions. ]

[ Ellis gets a kitchen knife and tries to angle it to show Gaku how should he cut these. Diagonally? Small and straight? ]

[ You know what's easier? Standing close to Ellis and putting his own hand over his and showing him exactly how to cut them. ]

[ Oh...

Ellis can practically feel the warmth from Gaku with how he's standing so close. His face reddens a little from the contact as he tries to carefully follow Gaku's guiding hand. ]

[ When he thinks Ellis has got it, Gaku lets go and moves away so he can start adding everything together.

He doesn't even think twice about the blush because he's a dumbass. ]

[ The way Gaku just keeps himself busy during the cooking just makes Ellis feel like a fool for getting worked up all by himself, so it's easy to just shut off that "feeling". Whew.

The rest of the chopping goes smoothly and he pokes Gaku when he's done. ]

[ Poor Ellis...

Gaku grins when he sees the results and grabs them to integrate with the rest of the dish. When he feels like it's fully simmered well with everything else, he turns to Ellis. ]

Two bowls, please.

[ Ellis goes to get two bowls and sets them next to Gaku. He smells something nice... but then remembers that he should plate the steamed egg he cooked earlier, so he goes to do that. ]

[ Gaku nods in thanks, portioning out their servings into the bowls.

He watches as Ellis plates the steamed egg, waiting for him to turn around before he points to it. ]

That looks great.

[ Ellis smiles in return as if to say thanks before going to set it on the table. He gets two cups for each of them, one for water and one for the wine. He has no wine glass, so they'll just have to drink wine from a regular ass cup. ]

[ Gaku takes over the soba, two pairs of chopsticks along with them. He goes back for the wine, pouring it in Ellis's glass first before his own. ]

Looks great.

[ All that's left is to turn down the overhead lights and light the candles. ]

[ He gets a fork for himself because he doesn't know how to use chopsticks before lighting the candles with a match. Gaku can turn the lights off if needed. The light switch is in plain view! ]

[ He's gonna do that! And try to ignore how doing that has suddenly made the vibes a little weird.

It's fine. It's. Fine.

Gaku sits in the chair across from Ellis, looking down at their table. ]

Looks good, doesn't it?

[ Ellis nods and sits down on the chair himself, putting his hands to thank the cooks for the meal before digging into the steamed egg first, because he knows how to eat that. When he's done, he looks at the soba. How does he eat this?? He looks up at Gaku. ]

[ Gaku raises his brows for a moment before he realizes.

Figuring it's easier to show him once again, Gaku scoots his chair so he's sitting next to Ellis and takes his fork. With it, he gathers up a generous amount of soba noodle, along with some of the vegetables.

He's not going to hold it up to his mouth, but he holds out the fork for Ellis to take it. ]

[ Oh, he's sitting next to him. Ellis takes the fork and just eats the noodles. He thought there would have been some sort of special procedure, so he can rest easy, knowing that there really isn't one. It's taking a while for him to chew since there was so much food, but he looks like he has sparkles in his eyes.

It's good! Definitely wins approval from Ellis. ]
