prologue

You awake to find yourself in a bed that creaks with your every movement, motes of dust flitting about the sparsely lit room. Whether you wake alone or with another by your side, you exit the worn-down building to find yourself on an old, abandoned farm. It isn’t long before a familiar voice lilts in your ears, carried to you on the breeze—

“Hurry over to the town square. Chop chop!”

Whether you go willingly or find your feet inexplicably compelled to trudge into town makes no difference. Once you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a small ocean of new faces— some confused, some angered, and others quite chipper. At the center of the crowd is a bright-eyed woman with an otherworldly allure, her white hair tied up neatly in a bun, pamphlets and assorted papers tucked in her grasp.

“Welcome to Crescentview, farmers!”

Spreading her arms out wide — as much as she can without her papers blowing away — she eagerly regales the crowd with some fun facts about the island and the town while also reminding everyone of one very important fact:

“Remember, you’ve been brought here to tend the earth, fall in love, and begin your new lives together. You’re not leaving until you do. It will be quite the experience for you, I’m sure.”

Complain, grouse, or rejoice if you like, but don’t expect the Goddess to budge. Oh, right, there’s that too: she, the Harvest Goddess, is the one presiding over this land. Don’t get on my bad side, she gently warns as she stuffs pamphlets into the hands of Crescentview’s aspiring farmers.

While you’re here, you may as well check out the pamphlet the Goddess insistently pressed into your hands. Within it, you’ll find a handy infographic on each of your neighbors detailing their likes, dislikes, and... ideal dates? Even the Goddess’ profile is there. How invasive! Each farmer’s picture is hand-drawn by crayon into simple stick figures with the only difference being how the hair looks on top of their heads… if it can be called hair with the mess of crayons, that is. Every single stick figure is smiling. In front of each personalized pamphlet, there’s a stick figure on the cover with the same style as the photo. It’s definitely yours with how the hair color seamlessly matches yours. For the ones who have multicolor hair, you might notice the goddess seems a little more huffy with you.

The pamphlet also includes a map of Crescentview and lists the services available in town. There aren’t many on this small, remote island. Learning how to fend for yourself seems like the best course of action. Finally, a hand-printed bingo card has been made up for each new island resident. The Goddess must have spent quite a bit of time making these...

The Goddess gives her new questionably loyal followers a chance to mingle and mix before speaking up with another announcement. A small group of haggard-looking fairies appear at her feet, and clapping her hands, a notice board springs into existence. When the fairies fail to react, she gives one a nudge with her foot, prompting them all to burst into the world’s smallest round of applause. It’s a little... pathetic.

“Ta-da! Behold: the task board. Every season, I’ll give you new tasks to complete, and in exchange, you’ll be richly blessed by me, the Harvest Goddess. Spring is the season of new beginnings, so let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking, hm?”

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from December 1st to January 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

1. Greet your neighbors. For every person you meet, you will be given a random bag of spring seeds. Potato, cabbage, turnip, strawberry, and cucumber seeds are available at this time. Alternatively, random mushroom spores are also available. These include morel, matsutake, and common white mushroom spores. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards. Please specify how much of each you would like when submitting your threads, i.e. “I’d like 5 random spring seed bags and 5 random mushroom bags, please!”

2. Exchange names. Start learning some names and faces: you’ll be seeing a lot of these folks! For each name you learn, you’ll earn a random bag of spring flower seeds. Daffodil, tulip, forget-me-not, primrose, and hyacinth are available this season. This task can be completed a total of 10 times for rewards, and yes, you can cheat the system and introduce yourself to someone you already know, but the Goddess won’t like it.

3. Check out your new farm. Take a look around and settle in! After a bit of wandering, you’ll notice a small cat or dog following you around and looking up at you with them big ol’ eyes. Looks like it wants to stay with you, but will you adopt it? This task can be completed once.

4. Till your field and begin planting. Find the beat up farming tools in your beat up house and begin beating your farmland into submission. Plant some seeds and be rewarded by the Goddess with a single chicken or rabbit to keep in your coop. This task can be completed once.

5. Visit another farm. Pay one of your neighbors a visit to receive a stationary set blessed by the Goddess herself. There are no cell phones or Internet on the island, so get used to sending all your “LOL”s and “XDDDD”s by hand. This task can be completed once.

6. Make a new friend. Isn’t friendship wonderful? For each person you proclaim to be your friend, you will receive two random gacha items. This task can be completed 3 times.

7. Pray to the Goddess. Whether you do so grudgingly or willingly doesn’t matter much to her so long as you’re doing it! Clasp your hands together and bow your head or throw an offering into her pond— she’ll hear you either way. Praying to the Goddess will net you a barn animal of your choosing: a cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task may be completed once.

Caution: throwing certain items into her pond may have consequences. Choose your offerings wisely.

[ Well, he would have preferred a picture from a photoshoot or something, but he supposes this is enough. Looking around, it doesn't seem like they've got too many names and faces to memories, so stick figures should be enough.

At least his hair color is accurate. He's kind of impressed. Figuring he may as well get to know everyone he can, he turns to the person closest to him. ]

[ Gaku makes a point to check out his farm before doing much else, which is where he comes upon a cat that refuses to leave him alone. Thinking that his housemate probably wouldn't mind, Gaku decides that he'll keep it around.

Which is why he has a cat sitting nice and relatively still in his arms as he walks around in an attempt to accomplish one of the tasks he saw on the board. ]

Hey! [ He'll wave at anyone he comes across. ] Gaku Yaotome. What's your name?

[ Outside of the task board, there's the bingo too. He's a little hesitant to exchange his card with others, given one of the prompts he has, but he can at least pretend that prompt simply doesn't exist as long as he doesn't acknowledge it. Briefly flashing his card, he smiles politely. ]

Have any squares you want to knock off? Some of this sounds pretty fun.

[ At some point, Gaku finds himself at the farm at the same time as his new housemate. He's a little nervous suddenly having to share a home with a stranger, but if he looks at this as a challenge, then it's something he can easily be fine with. Hands in his pockets, he approaches He Xuan at the first opportunity he gets. ]

Looks like we're staying here together. I'm Gaku Yaotome.

[ Oh - she isn't expecting to be approached, so she's a little surprised when Gaku flashes his card at her. She doesn't catch what any of it says, but she looks at her own card hastily, so as to not keep him waiting. ]

Oh-! Um, well...

[ She opts to show him hers. There's nothing too embarrassing - well, as embarrassing as what some others have - so she's fine with him looking. ]

Please take your pick. Maybe something easy...

[ Gaku looks between her card and the one in his hands. ]

We have a lot of the same ones. What do you like doing? Let's start there.

[ He Xuan looks positively...the opposite of whatever radiant and approachable is. His skin is a ghostly pale, and his hair is a devastating flowing black with golden eyes with a gaze that can pierce fear into most normal people. Gaku is probably not most people.

But, when he wants something, he plays along.

With varying results, but an attempt that is wholly himself is made for certain. ]

[ At least both of them are relatively tall? ]

Do you have experience working on a farm?

[ For someone that looks intimidating himself, Gaku can't help but feel a little bit nervous looking at He Xuan.

He smiles sheepishly. ]

I don't.

[ There may have been a show or two where he helped out on a farm, but that was in a controlled environment. Here, he's got no camera crew guiding him. ]

What about you?

Kaeya Alberich.

[ Hello! He doesn't wave but he does give a friendly smile. ]

I assume that you're completing the tasks on the board.

[ Adjusting the cat in his arms, his smile widens. ]

I am. If we're gonna need to farm, I might as well get all the seeds I can.

[ That means he has more opportunities to actually get something to grow. ]

[ sees the bingo option but then sees the cat and never looks back. she'll give gaku a wave and a cheery smile in return when he greets her. ]

It's Uta.

[ and now for the kitty cat, she'll try to give it a pet on the head. ]

They certainly look comfortable being held like that.

[ Uta, huh? It's a nice name... he wonders if the meaning behind it really is "song".

He scritches underneath the cat's chin. ]

Yeah. Found them at my farm. I couldn't resist letting the little guy stay with me, so here we are.

[ Mira's mostly kept to themselves, so when Gaku addresses them, they cast a glance around. ]

... Are you talking to me?

[ They seem pretty doubtful, and a more than a little awkward. ]

[ Thankfully(?), he's kind of used to this response, so it bounces right off of him and he smiles. ]

Yeah, I am. There's no one else around us, is there?

[She raises an eyebrow at him, glancing at the card Gaku flashes, about to reply before what's on her card hits her. There's a brief grimace, because - it's just awkward? It's just real awkward.

But she's going to ignore that for now.]

I mean, I'd like to take care of all of them, but I could settle for one or two right now.

[She's not gonna kiss on the first date!! Probably.]

Anything off the table for ya? Because some of mine do sound fun, and some I'm not so sure about just yet.

[ They can pretend that they don't have these horrible squares together. ]

A few of them. [ He will not specify. ] Let's do one that'll help us get to know each other better first.

[ In other worlds, nothing scandalous right now. ]

[Akechi is torn between finding a means to set the pamphlet on fire and tearing it into as many pieces as he can manage within a certain time frame-- of course, only for the purposes of testing the laws regarding arson and littering, if there are any. You understand.]

[He turns sharply toward Gaku when he speaks, and for the briefest of moments considers spitting out that no, he does not want to show his profile, because it shouldn't even be considered any identifying document. Instead, he smooths his figuratively ruffled feathers and turns his pamphlet outward toward him, though the smile on his face is a bit more strained than the simple one drawn in crayon.] I suppose at least the hair colors do seem to be on the nose. [He hates this.]

[ You know what? He gets the strained expression, given that they've all basically been kidnapped. It makes sense.

But it takes Gaku a second to reply, his eyes widening for a split second because wow this guy sure sounds like Momo. ]

Right? I'm kind of surprised that they're so accurate.

Tartaglia, at your service. Call me Childe if you prefer.

[ As far as first impressions go: he's incredibly smiley, despite the utter lifelessness in his eyes. Childe's tone only serves to further highlight that utter disparity. Gaze roaming over that little meow-meow in Gaku's arms, he gestures idly. No weight behind the movement at all, only restlessness seeping through. ]

Will you introduce me to your buddy as well?

[associative]

[ Hm. That lifelessness makes him uncomfortable, even though he's used to seeing smiles that don't reach someone's eyes in the entertainment industry. But here? It's off-putting. ]

Sure. I don't have a name for this cat yet, but he's mine.

[ He takes a step closer to Childe. ]

You can pet him if you want.

[ when gaku first speaks, achilles is temporarily distracted by his own profile. it's strange, he thinks. for one, it seems to have all his information there. hence, he seems to pause for a second before peering over at gaku. it's not that he feels particularly suspicious and he supposes there were special circumstances to everything. this is probably the first time he's ever been called upon and then... had his identity so blatantly revealed.

but, he seems to recover quickly enough. he's not the fastest man the world's ever known for nothing! (not actually applicable). ] I see, I see. [ he says casually, peering at the picture then back at gaku. ] It looks just like you. Especially, this part. [ he points at the stick figures smile.

giving a shrug of his own. ] Instead, why don't you just tell me about yourself?

First time I've heard something like that.

[ He laughs. Most people think he looks scary, so having his smile acknowledged right off the bat is kind of nice. ]

Fine, I'll go first. You see my name already, but I'll introduce myself again. Gaku Yaotome, from Japan. I'm the leader of the idol group TRIGGER.

[ That's really all there is about him that isn't listed on the profile or locked behind a higher social link. ]

[When in doubt, Gaku, just remember this: you agreed to go camping with Diluc. He hopes you've brought all the provisions you need to keep yourself alive, but because Diluc is a rather meticulous man, he's brought plenty for them both just in case. After setting up the tent, he turns to Gaku.]

Do you know how to start a fire?

[He's... assuming no, but he's going to ask anyway. How good are Gaku's survival skills?]

[ Poor.

At least he's somewhat prepared, a backpack full of different camping supplies he spotted in the grocery store and thought he might need. ]

I helped start a bonfire on a program once, but they didn't really give us a full lesson on starting one.

[ So the short answer is a resounding "no". ]

[ Kaspar looks over at him as he's greeted with a calm smile. He was probably caught staring far too curiously at a tree. But his gaze drops to Gaku's cat in the delay before he responds. It's really more like he's introducing himself to the feline instead. ]

[ Only then does he look over the rest of the other man, question trailing off in the spring air. ]

Do they have a name?

They do, don't they? I don't see why everyone's in a fuss about it, honestly.

[ that's because shylock is being chill about the entire thing as per usual. but anyway, he takes one glance at the young man's card and nods. ]

Have you painted before?

We almost look like twins... if it wasn't for the hair.

[ Then... don't they all look like family? A family of stick figures with different hair. Speaking of family, that dislikes section catches Noé's attention. ]

If someone's rude but they care about their family... is that still okay?

[ He's going to put too much thought into this!! ]

[ After having met up with Gaku again some time after their tree climbing adventures, he invites him over to his home for dinner so that he can thank him for preventing his fall. Ellis also warned Gaku that he's not too good of a cook, but he knows how to do the basic things and prepare ingredients. As for why his home instead of anyone else's...

When Gaku arrives, he'll see that Ellis's house is... an actual house. Everything has been fixed. The field looks like it has different soil too, if he looks at it when passing by. The door is wide open so Gaku can come in whenever he wants. It smells like something is cooking though. Ellis is making something similar to korean steamed egg. It looks fluffier than a souffle. He has more ingredients in the refrigerator, waiting for Gaku to arrive so that he can cook with him.

His kitchen looks like it went through an upgrade and there are far better kitchen tools here than at other houses too. Looks like his bingo hunting was worth it. There are rugs, curtains, and all the things that make a house a home. Very cozy.

A candle sits on the dining table, unlit. There's a box of matches next to it. ]
