summer has arrived

As the last of the sakura blossoms fall away and the leaves on the trees grow into ever more vibrant greens, the familiar buzz of cicadas begins to echo all throughout the isle. Summer is quickly approaching and bringing brighter days and blazing temperatures along with it.

Summer also signals the start of the wine production season. Grapes growing on trellises are a common sight on Crescentview during the summer and a notice on the town memo board from the local barkeep encourages farmers to consider growing some varietal grapes of their own.

Temperatures are rising, so put on a comfortable pair of shorts and head to the Town Plaza to see what’s cooking! While you’re at it, take a look at the calendar for Summer 1st through 15th.

This season’s crops are corn, onion, pumpkin, watermelon, and pineapple. Summer’s seasonal flowers are poppy, rose, sunflower, lily, and hydrangea. As for mushrooms, shimeji, trumpet, and common brown spores are available for the summer.

hot! ...or not

Posted prominently at the top of the Memo Board is a cartoonishly-written advertisement for the first annual Hot or Not hosted by the Goddess herself. Contestants will take to the stage while the audience votes on whether they are as hot as the blazing sun or cooler than a dead fish. Leave your egos at the door! ICly, this event takes place on Summer 8th.

task board

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from January 1st to February 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

This month’s tasks are centered around getting to know your fellow neighbors on a deeper level. As such, the Goddess has put together a small human scavenger hunt to encourage people to learn more about the people they are living with — and hopefully falling in love with.

Find someone who...

1. Was born in the summer
2. Pours milk into their bowl before the cereal
3. Plays a musical instrument
4. Has more than 3 siblings
5. Works out 5 times a week or more
6. Doesn’t like animals
7. Would like to date the Harvest Goddess
8. Has traveled around the world
9. Speaks two or more languages
10. Is wearing socks that aren’t black or white

Each submission will earn you two random bags of summer seeds. Specify whether you want crop, flower, or mushroom spores in your submission. This task can be completed a total of 10 times.

Many ingredients used in wine production grow in the summer, but so do a variety of tea plants and grains. Grapes, tea shrubs and grains like wheat and barley can all be grown on your farm or in your greenhouse, if you have one.

Complete the following tasks to earn yourself some nice beverage-producing crops for the farm:

1. Take something from last month’s harvest and gift it to a neighbor. You can give it to them directly, cook it into a meal, etc. Alternatively, craft them a bouquet, flower crown, or another gift from the flowers you grew last season. Complete 3 times for a total of 6 grape starters.

2. Share a piece of hot gossip with a neighbor or exchange secrets with them. It doesn’t have to be your secret! Complete 3 times for a total of 6 tea starters.

3. Exercise with someone. Go on a run, swim in the ocean, help them stretch out! Complete 3 times for a total of 6 grain crops. You may choose from wheat, barley, rye, or rice.

Summer is the perfect time to hang out on the beach and splash around in the ocean. Participate in some summer fun at the beach and earn more animals for your barn and coop.

1. Swim in the ocean, build a sandcastle, or bury someone in the sand. Do any of the following for one of the following animals: cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task can be completed once.

2. Participate in Hot or Not. It’s an annual tradition! Submit yourself or comment on someone else for a single chicken or rabbit. This task can be completed once.

local happenings

The Crescentview Times newspaper has chronicled the latest happenings around the island. A physical copy of the paper will arrive on your doorstep early in the morning on Summer 1st.

Recently, a group of townspeople have taken it upon themselves to check out the abandoned mine. They’ve made good headway on opening up the path in the hopes that would-be explorers will be able to take to the mines and find some of Crescentview’s fabled gems and minerals buried in its depths. They expect to be done by Summer 15th.

A strange “gurgling whisper” has been reported by some concerned townsfolk living in the mountains. The concerning sounds are coming from one of the lakes at the foot of the mountain. Supposedly, the voice is asking for offerings of... something. The townsfolk have yet to identify what exactly is being asked for.

A hurricane has been brewing off the southern coast of Crescentview. Meteorologists have yet to determine whether the hurricane will make landfall or not, so stay tuned for more updates.

Trahearne, being as he is, has never actually gotten the chance to enjoy all the delights the season has to offer. His experiences on the beach in these sunny months have been decidedly not relaxing or enjoyable at all. Needless to say, this is all very new for him.

But at least he knows the protocol. He knows better than to wear "clothes," so he'll go with the flow and strip down to his skin-tone thong modesty leaves. And now with no coverage, a large, nasty scar that still heals arcing across his chest is visible for all to see.

Catch him wading through the waves, lounging in the sun with a book, or awkwardly people watching from a distance.

Alternatively, he may show up one day with a large basket on his arm. What better way to get rid of their excess harvest by going to where all the people are? ]

[ Catch Trahearne hovering by the memo board every once in a while, staring at the Hot or Not notice.

He's torn. He's been told he's good looking, and the farm could use another chicken. But he really doesn't like the idea of getting up in front of everyone and subjecting himself to superficial standards...which he most certainly does not meet.

Considering how tall he is, he's probably blocking the view for other people to look at the memo board. Sorry. ]

It may not be totally cleared and open yet (he's a little impatient), but he still wastes no time heading down there to see what's going on. He may be lending a hand where he can, inspecting tunnels and tools, asking the local townsfolk about the gems...

He's not treating this like work or anything. Of course not. ]

[Oh? Is Trahearne thinking about participating? Diluc's feelings are mixed to say the least, and you can bet he'll be making that Trahearne's problem. Diluc settles beside him, arms crossed.]

[Diluc has no intention of going easy on you, friend. Choose your words wisely.]

[ Does Trahearne know about Kaeya and Diluc? I'm going to say no, for maximum drama.

Diluc's voice startles Trahearne out of his thoughts, and he turns to look at him with a smile. He steps back to allow space for Diluc to look at the board should he choose to do so. ]

I suppose I may, if I have at least one vote. [ He tilts his head curiously. ] Who might that be?

[ He might have an idea, but. ]

[Sure, he'll stand before the board, but he's more interested in staring at Trahearne. As one does when you've caused all of your own problems and insist on taking at least some of them out on your friendly neighborhood treeman.]

Oh, surely you don't need me to name names. Or do you have that many suitors?

[Goodness, he had no idea you were sticking your stamen in so many dudes, Trahearne...........]

[ The vibes are Not Good. Trahearne's initial cordial disposition slowly dissipates and he senses animosity coming from his friend. Well. He thinks they're still friends.

After a blink, he speaks hesitantly: ]

[ That is the only person he can think of. He wishes he could add Syrlya to that list, but he is never sure.

He does not have many suitors (or so he thinks--he has no idea he is Crescentview's most desirable bachelor). ]</small.

[ Even though he's blocking the view of the memo board, Lucia knows exactly what he's looking at. She'd seen the notice earlier and had taken the time to ponder why the Goddess would host such a silly event, but it makes sense since she's trying to push people together. Even so, that just sounds like an easy way for her to get humiliated, so she won't be partaking.

[ Trahearne jumps when he hears Lucia's voice, shaking him out of his thoughts. He steps aside to allow more room before the board, and when he sees who his company is, he smiles. ]

Hello, Lucia. [ It's been a while! ] I...am thinking of it, yes. [ He looks back at the sign. ] I'm not sure I will get any votes, but I suppose we receive chickens for participating, not for winning.

[irresponsibly]

Oh, of course you will! I'll give you my vote, at least. [ ... ] N-not to be weird or anything! But I really don't think you have anything to worry about.

[ She means to be encouraging, she swears!! The chicken is worth it, though. 100%. ]

The goddess seems a little intimidating, but I think she's giving people a fair chance...

Oh. [ That's a surprised "oh." His brows lift slightly--he wasn't expecting that. ] ...Thank you, Lucia. I'm flattered.

[ Well, if he has at least one vote...

His surprise passes quickly and he's back to his regular self. ]

I'm inclined to agree--I believe she means better than what many assume of her.

[ Hello, tree person she's never ever met, here is a newcomer just enjoying a popsicle and minding her own business on the beach. Like him, she's never really relaxed at a beach, either, but she's learning... She's walking by with said popsicle when she spots him lounging in the sun, and—

[ —hear that? That's the sound of Oriphi spitting out a chunk of popsicle and dropping the rest of it right by Trahearne's feet. Sorry, bud. ]

[ Trahearne almost trips over himself trying to keep himself from stepping on the piece of popsicle. He teeters before righting himself, and his gaze slowly lifts to see the culprit.

A...girl? With human features, sylvari coloring, and charr horns?

No matter. ]

[ She looks down at the remains of her popsicle, split into the chunk she'd spat out and the rest of it that she dropped in her surprise... and sighs.

It's only then that she finally looks at the stranger again, finding herself just as perplexed by his features. ]

I— Yes. Sorry, I was just surprised. I thought...

[ That people were supposed to wear clothes...?

But her gaze flits down past his face, and to his chest, where she sees that gaping scar. Or at least, what looks to her like a gaping scar. ]

Are you alright?

[ Trahearne...studies her, equally as perplexed. He has many questions, but knows better than to ask or pry. She apologizes, and he shakes her head. He isn't sure what startled her (probably him, in all honesty), but he isn't going to push that issue further.

How she stares at his scar, though doesn't escape him. ]

This? Yes, I'm all right. [ He offers a small smile, and places his hand over it. ] It's nothing to worry about--it's an old wound.

[ It's four weeks old. ]

[ tighnari is also, in fact, a little bit interested in these mines! though the forest is more his natural stomping grounds, there could be useful things here that he doesn't want to miss the opportunity to find. the more he knows about this place, the better.

so here he is, with his notebook and pencil both out, squatting beside.. a small mushroom! that is growing out of the ground right in the middle of the tunnel. he's sketching away, when he hears footsteps approaching. tighnari's long ears twitch and swivel toward trahearne. ]

Oh - be careful walking here! Don't disturb the mushrooms.

[ a "little bit" interested...

Trahearne is a "little bit" interested as well, in how his gaze is fixed upward at the structures of the tunnel, marveling at the engineering that is (rather, he assumes to be) native to Crescentview. He is so caught up in his thoughts that he does not notice the person or the mushroom in his path. ]

--Oh. [ He pauses mid-step, bare plant foot hovering just inches away from both Tighnari and the 'shroom. After a moment taking in the sight, he takes a step back. ]

My apologies. I did not see you there.

[veardant]

[ don't step on the mushroom, trahearne!! at least not yet. not until tighnari's done studying it and deciding whether or not he wants to harvest it. ]

It's fine. Don't worry about it.

[ huh. this guy looks a lot like the person he danced with at the spring festival.. two plant people?? at least, he's assuming they're plant people. they certainly look very floral. tighnari stands straight, stretching his back. ]

Am I in your way?

[ Yes! There are two plant people!!

Trahearne offers the stranger a smile, eyes curiously flicking over the ears before settling on his face again. ]

No, not at all. I was simply exploring. [ He can come back this way later.

His attention goes down to the mushroom. ]

I hope I didn't disturb anything important.

[ Trahearne is pretty easy to spot in a crowd. He's also relatively high on the list of people M-21 is content to share a beach with, so when he spots him wading in the waves he trots on over.

At what point in his approach does he realizes what Trahearne is (isn't) wearing? Too late to pause to be flustered. Maybe somewhere in all of Syrlya's talk about Trahearne's many virtues he could have told M-21 that he was a lot less reserved than he seemed, too. ]

Trahearne. ...Warm weather.

[ Yep. ]

[ This particular plant is more comfortable being (almost) naked than he is wearing cloth. Does he really count as clothed anyway when he usually just wears leaves he grew himself?

Either way, totally oblivious to M-21's fluster, Trahearne turns to look at him with a smile. ]

Hello, M-21. It is rather warm. Summer is well and truly here.

[ The sun is invigorating! There's a healthy sheen to his leaves...skin...hair... ]

Seasons move fast here.

[ He's just going to stand here talking about the weather while trying to decide where on Trahearne's healthy photosynthesizing glow is the safest place to rest his eyes.

Luckily for his dignity, it doesn't take long for his gaze to catch the scar on Trahearne's chest, and he frowns a little. ]

You're hurt? Did you get in trouble with the goddess?

Oh, this?

[ Trahearne's smile drops briefly, and he lifts a hand to touch the scar. It hurts remarkably less compared to when he first arrived, though there is a bit of soreness where the wound closes. ]

No, no. This scar is...

[ He hesitates for a moment. M-21 is his neighbor, and he trusts him well enough. Not like it matters much now, anyway. ]

...from a fatal blow, dealt to me right before I arrived here. [ His smile comes back. ] It's all right though--it's healing nicely.

[ translation: i died. ]

[ Gaku had looked at the board earlier, and he knows exactly what Trahearne is staring at.

He walks up, casually glancing up at Trahearne. ]

Are you thinking about participating? You should.

[ The voice shakes him out of his thoughts, though Trahearne doesn't really register what Gaku says at first.

But when it does, he gives a double take. ]

I should? Do you really think so?

[ Analyzing... what does he mean by that... ]

[ Gaku doesn't push people to do things he doesn't think they'd win. He's not familiar with talking trees but like... Trahearne is pretty at least. ]

The prize is good, you're not bad to look at... I don't think you'd lose anything by trying it.

[ Trahearne stares up and down at Gaku for a moment... Is this true. Is he really saying that honesty?? He keeps hearing this, and he's starting to think all these humans are in on some kind of joke together.

He's just. Never heard it said to him in his life, and never with this sort of frequency. ]
