jan event.

summer has arrived

As the last of the sakura blossoms fall away and the leaves on the trees grow into ever more vibrant greens, the familiar buzz of cicadas begins to echo all throughout the isle. Summer is quickly approaching and bringing brighter days and blazing temperatures along with it.

Summer also signals the start of the wine production season. Grapes growing on trellises are a common sight on Crescentview during the summer and a notice on the town memo board from the local barkeep encourages farmers to consider growing some varietal grapes of their own.

Temperatures are rising, so put on a comfortable pair of shorts and head to the Town Plaza to see what’s cooking! While you’re at it, take a look at the calendar for Summer 1st through 15th.

This season’s crops are corn, onion, pumpkin, watermelon, and pineapple. Summer’s seasonal flowers are poppy, rose, sunflower, lily, and hydrangea. As for mushrooms, shimeji, trumpet, and common brown spores are available for the summer.

hot! ...or not

Posted prominently at the top of the Memo Board is a cartoonishly-written advertisement for the first annual Hot or Not hosted by the Goddess herself. Contestants will take to the stage while the audience votes on whether they are as hot as the blazing sun or cooler than a dead fish. Leave your egos at the door! ICly, this event takes place on Summer 8th.

task board

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from January 1st to February 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

---

This month’s tasks are centered around getting to know your fellow neighbors on a deeper level. As such, the Goddess has put together a small human scavenger hunt to encourage people to learn more about the people they are living with — and hopefully falling in love with.

Find someone who...

1. Was born in the summer
2. Pours milk into their bowl before the cereal
3. Plays a musical instrument
4. Has more than 3 siblings
5. Works out 5 times a week or more
6. Doesn’t like animals
7. Would like to date the Harvest Goddess
8. Has traveled around the world
9. Speaks two or more languages
10. Is wearing socks that aren’t black or white

Each submission will earn you two random bags of summer seeds. Specify whether you want crop, flower, or mushroom spores in your submission. This task can be completed a total of 10 times.

---

Many ingredients used in wine production grow in the summer, but so do a variety of tea plants and grains. Grapes, tea shrubs and grains like wheat and barley can all be grown on your farm or in your greenhouse, if you have one.

Complete the following tasks to earn yourself some nice beverage-producing crops for the farm:

1. Take something from last month’s harvest and gift it to a neighbor. You can give it to them directly, cook it into a meal, etc. Alternatively, craft them a bouquet, flower crown, or another gift from the flowers you grew last season. Complete 3 times for a total of 6 grape starters.

2. Share a piece of hot gossip with a neighbor or exchange secrets with them. It doesn’t have to be your secret! Complete 3 times for a total of 6 tea starters.

3. Exercise with someone. Go on a run, swim in the ocean, help them stretch out! Complete 3 times for a total of 6 grain crops. You may choose from wheat, barley, rye, or rice.

---

Summer is the perfect time to hang out on the beach and splash around in the ocean. Participate in some summer fun at the beach and earn more animals for your barn and coop.

1. Swim in the ocean, build a sandcastle, or bury someone in the sand. Do any of the following for one of the following animals: cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task can be completed once.

2. Participate in Hot or Not. It’s an annual tradition! Submit yourself or comment on someone else for a single chicken or rabbit. This task can be completed once.

local happenings

The Crescentview Times newspaper has chronicled the latest happenings around the island. A physical copy of the paper will arrive on your doorstep early in the morning on Summer 1st.

Recently, a group of townspeople have taken it upon themselves to check out the abandoned mine. They’ve made good headway on opening up the path in the hopes that would-be explorers will be able to take to the mines and find some of Crescentview’s fabled gems and minerals buried in its depths. They expect to be done by Summer 15th.

A strange “gurgling whisper” has been reported by some concerned townsfolk living in the mountains. The concerning sounds are coming from one of the lakes at the foot of the mountain. Supposedly, the voice is asking for offerings of... something. The townsfolk have yet to identify what exactly is being asked for.

A hurricane has been brewing off the southern coast of Crescentview. Meteorologists have yet to determine whether the hurricane will make landfall or not, so stay tuned for more updates.

( Mishka listens attentively to the explanation, genuinely curious. Paddleboat, with foot-operated paddles - certainly. A play on a small screen - strange, but it seems a form of magic, so sure. And VCR and chill... That does raise an eyebrow, mostly because, like Adelis, he doesn't initially see the purpose of setting up the projection and then going at it, but...

Well, he supposes it isn't the most outrageous thing. )

This is true - it could ask you to engage in VCR and chill in public.

( He grins. Mishka, for his part, doesn't actually seem at all put off by the "in public" square, beyond, you know, how it's for the entertainment of a deity of dubious authenticity. For someone who lives his life slicing necks in the shadows, so to speak, the thought of stepping out of them doesn't alarm him - perhaps because he recognizes the innate tightrope act in the square, and finds it somewhat familiar, if, well, more licentious. )

I've seen plenty begin doing one task and have a lover begin to bother them during it. I suppose it's a suggestion that one finds the one beside them hard to resist.

( He taps the square idly with his hands, weighing the words on his tongue.

Adelis wouldn't do these squares with just anyone, but he clearly wanted them done - he valued these repairs enough, or he held curiosity about the acts described. Now there is this crossroads as to whether Adelis preferred to only do these erotic acts with a certain someones - perhaps a singular certain someone - or if anyone who meet the criteria would do. )

Still, it seems these could both be done concurrently, yes? Why don't we collaborate on the two of these?

( He smiles, unfaltering. If Adelis preferred only a certain someone, then he would turn Mishka down. )

[ With the curiosity of a child. Then again, he can't quite blame him- he's had his moments of coming face to face with bright and new curiosities. The consequences of being thrust into a place wholly unlike their own, with every simple thing a luxury they've nigh been granted before in their lives. But Mishka is far more forthcoming, as opposed to Adelis' wary caution. ]

If you'd like to haul that heavy monstrosity outside and deal with all it's spindly wires, be my guest.

[ It's bland in tone and obviously unimpressed. A terrible joke, as always. Mishka may be somebody unabashed at letting someone see him, or perhaps willing to take that risk wherever he pleases, but Adelis certainly is not. He'll keep his business behind closed doors, with few exceptions.

There's no comment on the potential reasoning behind it, instead leaning back in his chair to cast the paper a mildly dour look. The other is still examining it, having gone quiet, and it's only when he speaks that he actually gets a reaction. Rather, there's a moment of utter bewilderment followed by something unreadable, stiffening in his chair as he lets his eyes fall on the squares in question. ]

...So you're here for nigh a few hours, and one of the first things you decide to ask is whether I'm willing to sleep with you?

[ That's. Not really what he was expecting? He expected teasing, yes, perhaps something a bit more risque in lieu with the other's personality, but jumping straight to offering to fulfill an erotic square right off the bat is...something. Enough Adelis ends up going quiet as he contemplates this turn of events, eyes staring at the paper rather than Mishka himself.

...By virtue of himself, you'd think he'd decline right away. He does nothing but grouse about the other for nigh everything, and declares his distaste on the daily. And yet, it's not as if he detests the very idea. He wouldn't hang around and begrudgingly listen if he truly despised the other man, and he did say he'd prefer a familiar face to an unfamiliar one....

He finally looks up. ]

...I suppose there's little downside to it.

[ Nailed it. ]

( Really, the object of Mishka's little gambit was to see how Adelis would react. He expected, of course, some style of refusal as the baseline - this is Adelis, after all - but the means of refusal would be telling. If Adelis's quarrel is that it's Mishka offering and not any other person, that's very different than if Adelis refuses because he prefers to do it only with this one person.

(In short, he had his insight dice at the ready to roll.)

Adelis, however, does not refuse him - he does not refuse him at all, even in that halfway manner Mishka would have expected on Adelis's best day. There is an immediate quip, yes, and yet within the space of this exchange Adelis has already agreed.

Mishka pauses at the rapacity of it (for Adelis).

It's not as if he really took it to heart, or even took it personally, when Adelis called his bugs and his body disgusting - Adelis was not the first, would not be the last, and, if anything, has more license than others to say it to Mishka freely; most are wiser not to make a point of it, lest Mishka excise their tongues. Only Adelis is allowed to needle him so.

Still, one doesn't need to be hurt to understand someone might not want to go to bed with someone comprised tangibly of insects and disease. Never mind his mentor - a scoundrel who has no qualms using anyone, even his own protégé, and expects as much in return. Their relationship had never mutually erred on intimate in that way - or so Mishka believes.

And yet, all the same, Adelis's hesitation did not last nearly as long as he expected, and it concludes with so little vitriol it is, perhaps, one of the only things that has caught Mishka off guard in some time.

Still, his recovery is quick. The smile returns to his face with a flicker, and his composure is secure - maybe too pointedly secure. )

Now I find myself concerned you intend to do me in in the midst of it.

( He injects a bit of levity before he starts to over think it - and recalls his objective. So Adelis isn't emotionally committed to one person alone. Very well. Perhaps Adelis's objective really is his dogged dedication to luxury, at any cost.

Though, Mishka still finds himself curious to know who had made Adelis so comfortable within only a short time since first meeting. )

But, if you're agreeable, I don't see why not, either - I wouldn't call myself picky, but I certainly wouldn't mind a few fewer holes in my home. ( Gradually he pushes himself up, back onto his feet, feeling much more alive after a bit of sitting in the shade and some water. ) Now, where is this spindly monstrosity of wires? I'd like to see the selection of plays you have at your disposal.

( A beat, and then: )

We could also find ourselves a bit of alcohol, if you have any around. Consider it a celebration of our reunion.

( And, you know, if you don't want to sleep with bugman sober.

Though, in Mishka's case, it genuinely is a celebration of a reunion - with a friend he thought he'd not see again, after he'd been shuttled off into the endless desolation of the dark. )

[ By all rights, he should have declined it. It would be the norm for him, with all his hissing jabs and his thorny words, especially directed at this man in particular- who vexed him constantly, with his insufferable demeanor. It was a secondary source of his headaches when he was still under his tutelage, and likely still is. He could say no with his usual sharp tongue, and it would have likely been accepted without a fuss.

He does mean it, when he calls the other's abilities unpalatable. One sees many sickening things in Ostoya, from the rot to the violence, but the sight of the other's predecessor pinned to the wall like a ornamental bug on display has stuck with him for all the years he stepped foot in that office. It reminds him of what they both are...that is to say, the worst of the worst, making use of who and what they have to get by, including each other.

...But in a sense, he's used to it, despite his looks of disgust. The plagues, and the scuttling of insects that seems to follow him nigh everywhere. He likely wouldn't have been able to tolerate standing at his side for years, if he hadn't.

( Why he did, is another question entirely. One even he couldn't give a proper answer to, and why he decides to agree despite all his gripes ).

He watches the expression on the other's face fall in a brief moment of satisfaction, perhaps- after all, it's rare he manages to pull it off. But then it's back, albeit far more lax than it should be. The accusation, naturally, makes him scoff. ]

I'd appreciate if you didn't compare me to any of your little friends. [ Really, what does he think he is. A black widow? ] I just cleaned this house- it would be far more trouble to deal with the mess than you're worth.

[ Not to say he couldn't hit him again, if he decides to act like himself a bit too much. And he just might, because really- the fact he just decided to up and ask (and push it forward no less) when he hasn't even been here a day makes him feel...something he can't quite place. Probably better to not dwell on it, as he pushes himself to his feet as well. He already agreed, and it's too late to take it back. ]

...Don't complain to me if you're not fond of them. The rest of them seemed like such a waste of time, they weren't even worth considering. [ A fortunate thing he had decided to pick up some things to practice with their newfound video player. That being said, the amount of gag-worthy romance movies on display were enough to make him doubt. ] Go and sit on the bloody couch, then. And don't touch anything, because I certainly don't know how to fix it if you break it.

[ Because if, god forbid, he's actually doing this- he needs to get some things. Alcohol may be a good idea, too. So he'll let Mishka meander into the other half of the room with it's nice comfy couch and big flatscreen TV while he disappears into the room on the other end. It's fairly obvious it's the bedroom, from first glance. ]

( It's the most curious thing. For every step he presses forward, Adelis moves with him back. There is generally some resistance at this point - at any of the several junctures they've moved long past - but he faces none.

Adelis gnashes at him, but doesn't fully bite. Why?

He's pulled together his composure with force, so Adelis's acquiescence doesn't provoke visible reaction from him this time, but it does hold his thoughts. He keeps pushing to see where Adelis draws the line, and Adelis - entirely unlike him - never does.

Why? )

You've always known me to be well-behaved, haven't you? ( lol ) I wouldn't worry about me.

( Mishka will dutifully slip off to the couch as suggested, and, after a moment of admiring and testing its quality, finds himself approving. He takes a seat on it, half-melting onto it on account of the comfort, and it strikes him that, consequent of his own actions, he really may be sleeping with Adelis.

"Why?" He supposes it must be because Adelis has few people he's willing to fill out these bedding squares with, and Mishka is one of those few. "Why?" Perhaps this, too, is a part of his dogged pursuit of luxury.

He considers the distant memory of a far younger Adelis, awkward and sharp-tongued and, in some subtle way, flustered, very clearly attracted to his teacher - as most children are wont to be at some point. They imprint on the first they see, and they grow out of this quickly. The "why" couldn't be this.

He closes his eyes once he's satisfied with his scan of the (quite nice) room, his thoughts lingering on the bedroom door.

He didn't really have a reason to care so much, anyway. Adelis could sleep with whomever he liked, including Mishka, and he could do it for some extra pots and pans if he wanted. They would sleep together, unromantically, on this couch (he presumes), and it wouldn't mean anything.

Very well. He reminds himself how just some time ago he was grateful to have met an Adelis untouched by the worst of what was yet to come - what else is there to want? )
for8000amonth: (pic#16106249)

[personal profile] for8000amonth 2023-01-17 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
[ All Mishka's response gets is a mild scoff of dismissal, as if he doesn't really believe that- and he doesn't, truly. 'Mishka' and 'Well-behaved' are subjective depending on the situation, and in this one, he's not too sure whether it fits. Regardless, he'll let him do his thing- at the very least, the meagre luxuries of comfort should be enough of a distraction.

Much unlike himself, who prefers to keep his thoughts clear and goals set, Adelis finds his mind swirling as he absentmindedly shifts through the dark to his side of the bedroom, pulling open the bedside table drawer to rummage through it. He does have a moment where he stares at the interior for a moment, feeling his brows knit as the reality of whatever the fuck this is starts to sink in.

It's not something he'd ever expect the elder to offer him, truly. Mishka had always been himself, playful with that unreadable smile, but Adelis knew what a goal-oriented person he could be- it's where he picked it up from, after all.

He's not a feral, desperate teenager anymore. Whatever he had when he was younger, he simply chalked up to typical adolescent behavior, the burgeoning feelings just a result of someone showing an interest in him in some way, after years of scraping by by himself. The minor desire for praise and recognition going hand in hand with the sense of satisfaction the knife and coin in his hand brought him.

...Right, is what he thinks as he takes a small bottle out and tucks it in his pocket, this is just what he's been taught. Taking advantage of opportunities offered for your own benefit. Isn't that technically what this is? All it is, even.

It wouldn't be the first person he's slept with for the purpose of the end result. It just so happens this is with someone he knows far more intimately.

The bedroom door closes with a soft click, and the cabinet swings open with nary a creak on it's well-oiled hinges. When he finally steps in to stare at Mishka nearly melted into his couch, he raises an eyebrow before tapping two glasses and a bottle of whiskey on the coffee table. His own, of course- Ryuki can keep his alcohol stash. He seems like he needs it. ]

Getting comfortable, aren't you.

[ He keeps his tongue sharp, to bring some sense of normalcy. If Mishka so desires, he can pour himself a glass if he wants it now, as the younger turns back to fiddle with the TV. He's not too happy about it, but he at least seems to somewhat know what he's doing, screen flickering to life and glowing a soft blue.

When he turns back, it's with a few cases in hand- most of them in varying shades of ominous red with mildly threatening titles. ]

Do you need to offer an opinion, or shall I just put in whichever seems less irritating?

[ Yeah, they're...all horror movies. ]

( Mishka lazily, without much effort, half-opens his eyes once Adelis is right in front of him - he could hear him returning sooner, but he didn't bother opening his eyes, then. )

This couch is more comfortable than every bed I've had combined, I think.

( Which isn't very many, but still.

He studies Adelis's expression for a brief moment before it flicks to the TV, which finally revives him enough to sit up more properly as he watches the empty blue with some fascination for a few moments. Then, he glances to the cases, raising an eyebrow after a moment. )

My, how gruesome.

( He seems almost... amused? To someone like Adelis who's lived horror, these titles seem in some way almost quaint. He's going to lean over and start pouring himself a little a glass, given Adelis left him on his own. )

Well, they all seem about the same to me. Perhaps whichever is least likely to incite your commentary, if such a selection exists.

( So yeah, the least irritating, but he doesn't think that means much when it comes to Adelis. )

God forbid you ever sleep in your own, then. Perhaps you'll simply lay there and waste away rather than get up again.

[ He can hardly disagree, though- everything from the chairs to the beds are ten times better than anything he's ever had back home. People like them of the lower class are, after all, only afforded the most splintered and hard of furniture. Even the simplest of comforts in this place is considered a lush and vibrant luxury to the two of them.

'Gruesome' he says. Adelis only offers a blank look. ]

I'm certain I've seen worse in the streets after a Dead Night.

[ Especially in Ovosca- the people are hardier for their independence, but the lack of undead protection often leaves them more susceptible than most to the things that lay outside their communities. The blood-spattered cabins and leering knives on the covers of these seem tame in comparison.

He picks one at random, something about serial killers and summer camp, and pokes a few buttons with the tinge of irritation until he finally gets it to work. The screen darkens, before opening with the ominous chords of music as he finally gets to his feet and strides back over the couch. He drops with the crossing of his legs, before reaching to fill his own glass as a steady narration drones in the background.

I've little idea what constitutes a marathon, so I suggest you check every so often. It'll mark it off automatically, anyway.

[ He's not expecting much entertainment from this, really, but hopefully the tinge of booze will take the edge off however this is going to make him feel. ]

Should I remain here, I'll rely upon you to feed and groom me.

( Mishka indulges in the alcohol casually, not drinking often but, when he does, drinking it with the same consistency one might drink water. After all - he's always been immune to the effects of alcohol, and they were really mainly doing this for Adelis. He has no reason to suspect his tolerance has changed.

He does perk up once the movie starts playing, though, his attention fixed for a good while even if the narrative is entirely uninteresting. This is one of those few moments where Mishka seems genuinely transfixed.

He smiles a little more broadly, if slight. )

... Ah? Yes, very well. ( He laughs. ) Perhaps this may be entirely too distracting.

( He says this, but shifts in his seat to get comfortable - ensuring there isn't really that much space between them. He won't neglect adelis for the movie ... much. )

Such a wonderful magic this is - and it's already mundane to you?

I doubt you could afford the recompense I'd demand for that. I'd sooner put you outside in the shed.

[ He takes a sip of his own drink, albeit far smaller than Mishka's. It's a fairly strong liquor, being his choice of preference, but he's learned his tolerance isn't what it used to be...in part to his newfound affliction. He has no reason to think Mishka's has changed, however, so he doesn't comment on his usual habit. It's what he's used to seeing, anyway.

He doesn't care much for the setting or the irritatingly perky teenagers on screen milling about, albeit the campfire gossip about local murderous legends is at least something more interesting. Unlike Mishka, he's not so easily fascinated. ]

You do realize these last over an hour each. [ In other words: they're gonna be here a while. ] You've plenty of time to get tired of it.

[ Adelis' gaze lightly shifts to the decreased distance between them on the couch, but doesn't move on his own- not yet, anyway. ]

It's interesting, at least. [ Not too sure how to describe it. ] But their ideas of 'horrifying' are far more different from ours.

[personal profile] yourlenore 2023-01-18 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
( Honestly, he's not partial to the taste of anything mixed - but mixed drinks are a luxury he very rarely has in Ostoya, so, begrudgingly, he's gotten used to the sharp tinge of alcohol, and handles it with ease.

It's surprising how often business partners like to drink while working out contracts - it builds rapport, supposedly. It made no difference to Mishka either way. )

It must be. ( He agrees, his eyes drifting from the screen to Adelis, briefly. ) After all, the woods they're in seem quite agreeable. They're dressed light, unarmed...

( Not to mention how small the scale their gossip is, and how mild their murderous legends. )

... The slightest disturbance alarms them. How sweet it must be, to live in such a genial reality - well, prior to the events of this play.

[ Mishka can speak for himself- after years of drinking the gut-punching or watered-down garbage most taverns carry, he finds the spirits readily available here to be far more palatable.

While he may not be as bad as most, it's a staple for one's meagre spare coin to go towards a drink or two. Makes the life a little easier, or at least more tolerable. ]

Not to mention, they've only night half the time to begin with. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

[ When the axe falls the first time, he doesn't even blink, albeit the general panic and over-exaggerated screams earn a mild snort. ]

...If they used their brains instead of screaming and flailing, maybe they'd live longer.

[ A regular pair of slasher movie critics, they are. At least it's probably better than whatever sappy love stories or cringe-inducing comedies they also had as selections- god forbid he ever agree to touch those. ]
yourlenore: (Default)

[personal profile] yourlenore 2023-01-18 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so the halved nights are a common thing?

( Mishka, for his part, is enjoying himself - the production values exceed that of a play, even if the output is a pale imitation of reality. Besides... )

It's quite plain whoever staged this isn't familiar with what it means to be afraid. Most don't scream quite like that when startled to death.

( Literally! Ha ha. Of course, in Mishka's line of work, he tends to prefer a clean kill - screaming utterly excised. He sippies. )

It must be interesting, to live a life so palatable you begin to put together tales of murder and artisanal sprays of blood.

Always, apparently. They live permanently in half light and half night in most other places.

[ Most, because he's met one other person who's also not used to the sun's existence, and heard of another. Comradery, perhaps.

Now, of course, the scene has flipped to night, and it still feels oddly quaint...despite, of course, the rampant slaughter. He's sure most spirits pick better methods of killing than taking a machete than a bunch of pathetic teenagers, but then again, drowning may just have that effect on people. ]

Isn't it. I doubt any of them have ever actually seen a proper decapitation. [ A wave of the hand, and another sip of his drink. ] The fact they rely on making things up than simply going off local happenings says enough.

[ Maybe the next one will be far more interesting, since this one is wrapping up. It seems only person ends up developing the spine to try and fight back in the end...probably the most accurate part. ]

( Mishka pours himself a little more, absently. Normally, he's not, really, the sort to absent-mindedly do things, but, you know how alcohol is. He sure doesn't. )

Certainly not. That they haven't a corpse at hand to drag onto stage is telling. ( Heheh. ) The makeup they've done is a little amateurish - done by a careful hand, but not a mind familiar with core. It reminds me of some certain new recruits, putting together their first disguises with a bit of dirt and some stolen rouge...

You made your fair share of mistakes, too, when you first began.

( Aha, a bit of a haunting at the end, and a cliffhanger. Well, Mishka seems thoroughly entertained, if anything. )

Another, then?

[ Luckily, Adelis is paying more attention to the beginning end credits than Mishka at the moment, so his absentmindedness goes unnoticed. He polishes off the last of his glass before setting it down on the table, grimacing lightly at the suggestion. ]

I was not that bad. [ He insists. Others were worse! ] And you could hardly expect me to be a bloody expert, since makeup was the least of my priorities.

[ He had enough worries with food and coin, he hardly cared much for his appearance back then. A high contrast compared to now. ]

I suppose we're going to get nowhere with just one.

[ It's too easy to pick apart the obviously fake murder, even on a screen. When you've seen one person get their arms cut off or guts ripped out, you've seen them all. It takes a moment after he gets up for him to remember how to take the disc out, before he manages to slip it back into it's case and pick up another. He's not too sure what a 'chainsaw' is, but there's a first time for everything!

He only slightly refills his glass, compares to how much the other seems to be guzzling down. There's a mild side-eye as the screen turns to the orange tint of sunset. ]

If you drink all of that, you'll be buying me another bottle.

You're lucky I was willing to critique you. Most freelancers, new to the trade, disguise themselves badly - and fail quite fatally for their transgressions.

( He says with some amusement, as if it were a funny hazing ritual, and not people dying and the Syndicate exacting the cost of their failure on their loved ones or neighbors.

He drinks slow as the title swoops in, raising an eyebrow - a "massacre" certainly sounds promising. His head resting back against the couch, he turns it toward Adelis, half grinning. )

Hmmm... Perhaps I can pay you back some other way?

( Joking... Unless? Well, they're here for that, anyway, )

...And let me die after you went through all that trouble of picking me up? Hells forbid you taint your own generosity.

[ You could drown a man with how thick that sarcasm is. That being said, he doesn't take it too seriously in the same vein- after all, if he fucked up, there'd be nobody to extract anything on. No friends, no family, no loved ones.

These weird metal carriages or whatever they are seem obnoxiously loud, and just as prone to breaking down as wooden ones, apparently. Why there's so many of them in these silly movies is a question he doesn't feel like finding the answer to.

Amidst the soft noise of arguing, he turns his head to stare blankly at the other, returning the grin with a distinctly unimpressed gaze. He's going to ignore the subtle flirting, and whatever it made him feel for a split second in favor of thinking how cringe it is. ]

...Do you really think your technique is worth that much.

[ Do you think whiskey is cheap. ]

Is it so wrong for one to protect their own investments?

( A little cold? Maybe. But Adelis could take it.

The cars, while curious, hold his attention a little less than Adelis's deadpan reaction. If anything, he was fishing for a no. Thank god he finally found one - anchors him a little bit after a weird series of agreements.

In any case, he laughs. )

How cruel. Then how about this: how much whiskey would you sell me for?

( Literally sell, before Adelis says anything. Parents sell their kids off for beer money all the time, so, you know. )

How warmhearted. Perhaps there is something the maggots haven't eaten yet.

[ Yeah, right. Cold it may be, but it's not any different from their usual banter- and he already knows the truth of it. Investments are something they share priority in.

Mishka's laugh resonates with the creaking of feet on wooden boards, and he flits his gaze back if only to scrutinize. Really, who wanders in random houses in the middle of nowhere, even if they are looking for help...it looks to be in the same shoddy shape as most Osoyan homes.

Well, he doesn't have time to dwell on it for long. ]

Highly depends on your attitude. I'd be inclined to sell you for less on a bad day.

[ Unabashed. He takes another sip. ]

Four bottles, perhaps. Only if it was good, however- your head could likely fetch me better.

[personal profile] yourlenore 2023-01-18 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
That's particularly generous of you.

( Four bottles is surprisingly high to hold out for when Adelis could easily (hypothetically) sell him for a bottle, or less if he was feeling especially prickly.

The brutal sounds of a slow parade of slaughter is enough to borrow his attention back to the screen, though the theatrics of the deaths aren't super impressive. )

While I might agree my head would certainly go for more, I'm afraid the Syndicate would come to collect any wages you might gather off my sale.

( The way he speaks of it in the present tense is, perhaps, telling - as if, even here, he's still in their possession. )

But, knowing you, you would find some way to make off with the money regardless.

If I was going to get rid of you, I'd want my full moneys worth. Hell only knows the horrific amount of effort that I would have to put into it.

[ He's not going to bring up the last time he saw him, it was to chuck his dream-self down a belltower- he knew better than to think that would kill him of all people.

The dramatics are just as bad as the last time, but at least the murder methods seem to be kicking it up a notch. So that's what a chainsaw is...far too bulky and messy for his tastes, though.

His gaze flickers at that, pausing mid-tip of his glass before he rolls his eyes. ]

I highly doubt any of them will be able to skulk around here. Our gracious host decides who stays or goes, and nobody's leaving 'till she gets what she wants.

[ Marriage...still seems rather far-fetched for a pair of seasoned killers, if you ask him. Still, can't complain if it means he won't be going home. ]

I'd hardly stick around long enough for them to catch me, anyway. [ A hand idly brushes his shoulder, skimming the sunburst-shaped scar beneath white cloth. Right...even death can't keep him down, apparently. ]

[personal profile] yourlenore 2023-01-18 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
( The chainsaw, while effective as any monster in the wilds, does not earn approval from Mishka - it's not efficient, and efficiency holds more weight with him. At least the killers seem to be appropriately manic, he supposes. )

Hmmm. Do you suppose she'd return us to where we came from, if we marry? Or, rather, let us stay?

( If only he had the words to describe the endless expanse of nothing. How it seemed to stretch timelessly on - so long it felt nearly as if he had floated in there longer than he had existed as himself; as Mishka.

How humbling it had been; how lonely; and without, in the end, any comforting release of death. Just indifferent quiet. )

... Does it still hurt?

( He doesn't look at Adelis when he asks, because he knows Adelis hates that sort of attention. But it's clear his attention remains on the scars he knows are below the fabric, and not the frenetic energy of the movie, the killers moving in quick motion. )

[ A bit more maniacal, than the utter silent masked murderer from the last one. He can't really expect efficiency from a man wearing a mask made of human skin, though.

Adelis mulls over the question for a minute, gaze slipping into the brown liquid in his cup. ]

I doubt she'd go through all the effort of making us do her dirty work just to throw us out. She doesn't seem to care much as long as we're do what we're told.

[ She speaks with a detachment, and yet a fondness for some. She's a tough one to read, but he hasn't spoken to her head-on himself. Not quite worth it. Perhaps if it comes down to it, though, he'll make the request himself.

Never again will he walk under the endless night, if he can help it. Here, he sleeps without waking to screams and howls in the night. That's good enough.

The thought lasts for all of a minute before his gaze snaps up, eyes narrowing slightly at the question- it's not the fact that Mishka isn't looking at him, considering his feelings, no. It's something else entirely. ]

Does what hurt.

[ Adelis has scars- Mishka knows that. But he hasn't divulged the nature of his previous quest in it's entirety, nor is he privy to the details of his death. So the question is, why is he asking about things he knows nothing of? ]
yourlenore: (Default)

[personal profile] yourlenore 2023-01-18 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
( Adelis's perspective, while reasonable, sounds too good to be true to Mishka, who can't help but hold reservations about any good thing.

Adelis had been one good thing, for instance, and look what Ostoya did to him. And even if Adelis had come out stronger for it - well. Their paths were fated to split eventually. Mishka could tell as much the moment he picked Adelis up, gnashy and irate as he was, like a feral, cornered beast.

These thoughts, too, are cut short by Adelis's characterstically curt response. He looks to Adelis. )

I've already apologized, haven't I? If I'd known such was his plan, I'd not...

( Mishka, his wit dulled by continuous drink, had mistaken Adelis's response as his usual, arbitrary defensiveness - but it seems halfway through his statement, uncannily honest for what it was, he realizes his error. Hm.

He sets down his glass for the moment. )

... You'd just been complaining of that reddish sunblight, hadn't you?

( Yes... Nice save... )
