midsummer storms

The unrelenting summer heat has begun to let up as of late and those who make a habit of reading the news will know why: a hurricane is set to make landfall on Summer 16th. Spread the word to your neighbors and keep your loved ones and animals indoors. Expect that there may be some damage to your property, field and trees!

Fortunately, the hurricane brings with it only moderate wind and rain. Once the storm subsides and the whipping winds calm, you’ll be handed a letter by one of the Goddess’ many sprightly fairies who look quite a bit healthier and happier than they used to. Some of them look like they’ve been hitting the gym while others have a nice set of shiny new acrylic nails on their fingertips. Good for them.

Anyway, the letter details an upcoming event hosted by the Goddess: the first annual date auction. She has considerately included a form with her letter inviting islanders to volunteer as dates to be auctioned away while others have been voluntold. Oof. With the promise of a fabulous and extravagant vacation for those participating, the reward may very well be worth the price of entry.

With more news to announce, she requests that everyone meet up in the Town Plaza. The task board hasn’t seen any mid-season additions, but the upcoming date auction and the recently opened mines promise to keep islanders well occupied through the rest of the season.

This season’s crops are corn, onion, pumpkin, watermelon, and pineapple. Summer’s seasonal flowers are poppy, rose, sunflower, lily, and hydrangea. As for mushrooms, shimeji, trumpet, and common brown spores are available for the summer.

and... sold! first annual date auction

It’s time to d-d-d-date auction! Participation is highly encouraged by both the Goddess and her pushy little helpers. Every islander received a form delivered to them by said pushy fairies that contains the following application:

Describe yourself in three sentences or less:
List three of your best and worst qualities:
If you were a fruit, which fruit would you be and why?
Describe your ideal romantic partner:
Why should the auction attendees bid on you?

...You may have noticed that the form does not include a section for your name. That’s because this is a blind auction in which bidders must place their bids based only on the information provided in their application. Love is blind, as they say!

While some people may eagerly volunteer themselves to be auctioned away, those who are less bold may have been signed up to participate by a friend, neighbor, or the Goddess herself. In so many words, if you’d like to sign your character up but don’t believe they’d willingly volunteer to be auctioned, worry not! You may use the Goddess (or another character) as your convenient excuse so sign them up anyway.

Submit your applications here by the 20th at 12pm EST. The date auction will go live on the 21st at 12pm EST.

As mentioned in the overview, all auctioned off parties and their winning bidders will win an all expenses paid trip... somewhere. The Goddess’ lips are sealed as to the destination, but you get the feeling this trip will be quite a bit more than you bargained for.

The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from January 1st to February 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.

Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.

Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.

This month’s tasks are centered around getting to know your fellow neighbors on a deeper level. As such, the Goddess has put together a small human scavenger hunt to encourage people to learn more about the people they are living with — and hopefully falling in love with.

Find someone who...

1. Was born in the summer
2. Pours milk into their bowl before the cereal
3. Plays a musical instrument
4. Has more than 3 siblings
5. Works out 5 times a week or more
6. Doesn’t like animals
7. Would like to date the Harvest Goddess
8. Has traveled around the world
9. Speaks two or more languages
10. Is wearing socks that aren’t black or white

Each submission will earn you two random bags of summer seeds. Specify whether you want crop, flower, or mushroom spores in your submission. This task can be completed a total of 10 times.

Many ingredients used in wine production grow in the summer, but so do a variety of tea plants and grains. Grapes, tea shrubs and grains like wheat and barley can all be grown on your farm or in your greenhouse, if you have one.

Complete the following tasks to earn yourself some nice beverage-producing crops for the farm:

1. Take something from last month’s harvest and gift it to a neighbor. You can give it to them directly, cook it into a meal, etc. Alternatively, craft them a bouquet, flower crown, or another gift from the flowers you grew last season. Complete 3 times for a total of 6 grape starters.

2. Share a piece of hot gossip with a neighbor or exchange secrets with them. It doesn’t have to be your secret! Complete 3 times for a total of 6 tea starters.

3. Exercise with someone. Go on a run, swim in the ocean, help them stretch out! Complete 3 times for a total of 6 grain crops. You may choose from wheat, barley, rye, or rice.

Summer is the perfect time to hang out on the beach and splash around in the ocean. Participate in some summer fun at the beach and earn more animals for your barn and coop.

1. Swim in the ocean, build a sandcastle, or bury someone in the sand. Do any of the following for one of the following animals: cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task can be completed once.

2. Participate in Hot or Not. It’s an annual tradition! Submit yourself or comment on someone else for a single chicken or rabbit. This task can be completed once.

to the mines!

The once abandoned mines have been reopened and are now accessible to any brave islanders who wish to explore their depths! But be warned: doing so may come at a cost. Will you take the risk and come out on top with rare and otherworldly treasures, or will you trip and sprain your ankle after stumbling over a small rock? Only one way to find out!

OOCly, the mines can be explored once per week and exploration is undertaken in a cyoa-style thread. The mines are a permanent feature and can be accessed now until the end of the game. Have fun!

🌝 wine and paint (cw eventual underage drinking).

[ During the evening of the 18th, Vanitas can be found inside of the bar with a glass of wine. It's untouched, just sitting on the table, though he's also brought with him some paints and a small canvas. He's currently reading a book – one about a "Misleading fox", as it says on the cover.

When someone enters the bar, his eyes flicker upward, away from his book and directly at the new patron. He lowers it and wears a small grin on his face, giving them his full attention. ]

You there. Care to join me for a task?

[ Loath as he is to do these, he's given in to the goddess' will (for now) and will be partaking in the wine and paint square on his card. It's a shame he can't do it alone. ]

[ At various times throughout the month, Vanitas can be found sitting in high places – he can be seen on top of random roofs (and, quite possibly, yours), and occasionally on lower tree branches. He seems to be deep in thought most of the time as he gazes out towards the horizon.

Shoo him off of your roof, join him...the choice is yours. ]

[ There's no work that needs to be done, or so Vanitas thinks. Securing things, keeping any crops safe...none of it matters. He's being stubborn and letting his contempt of this place get in the way of being helpful in making sure their shared home doesn't fall apart, but he's not budging anytime soon. Instead, he's being broody and sitting on top of his bed, leisurely reading a book.

Aether is free to bother him about not helping, check on him, have a chat – whatever his heart desires. Either way, Vanitas will give Aether a glance when he sees him enter their bedroom at any point...

...and then go back to reading his book. ]

[Aether has been running around aiding others in preparation for the hurricane, but also making sure that the farm he's now looking after doesn't fall apart. This is when he notices that someone is missing and so, the search begins.

Surprisingly, he finds Vanitas in his room, reading a book like nothing else matters. Aether approaches him.]

So this is how you're planning to help out?

[He's frowning slightly.]

You do realize that we'll be in trouble soon, right?

[unchainer]

[ Poor Aether is working so hard, and here's this guy, brooding over in the corner. He looks up from his book, makes note of the page number, and closes it. He decides he'll indulge Aether and answer him: ]

Do you really think we can secure our house in this condition?

[ Their house is still in questionable shape and all, but he sounds miffed about...something. ]

We barely have anything worth salvaging.

[startraveler]

[He can see that and in a way he understands where the other is coming from. At the same time, Aether doesn't have an habit to give in so easily.]

We have to try. Unless you want a leaking roof and even more damage than before.

[Their living conditions may not be the best, but that doesn't mean they can't improve that in the future.]

( Mishka, who should be entirely sworn off drinks after the disaster that was some days prior at Van Zieks's, is not one so easily deterred. He glances over when addressed, then to the table. )

Now, could this happen to be one of the tasks that involve painting?

( If anything, he's interested - he drifts over to hear him out. )

[ He nods towards Mishka. But, uh- ]

Haha, if you're too burnt out on alcohol from a few days ago, then you're free to just have a sip and concentrate on the painting. Surely that'll suffice, no?

As much as I would like to protest, I will agree that I would not like to experience a hangover again. Ah, I thought it would never end - it, and the hurricane...

I do happen to have a square that asks me to paint my partner's portrait, and have them paint mine in turn, if that doesn't offend you. That would make this an equitable trade.

[Judith quite enjoys her night time walks. But upon returning to her home, she's not really sure what to think about this strange person sitting on her roof. It's not a good roof (yet). Surely there are better places to sit.]

[ The state her house is in is about the same as his, so he sees no issue with this (?). He looks down at her. ]

It's not as if I'm disturbing your home; it just just happens to have a nice view.

[ He sighs a little. ]

It's in the same condition as mine, anyway, making it no better or worse.

[ Judith clasps her hands together behind her back briefly. But then she's climbing up swiftly to join him. Hmmm]

[ It must be Noé's lucky (?) day because Vanitas' roof of choice is his own. Actually, he's missed hanging out with the vampire doctor. Not to mention that they've been through a lot lately.

The words that once came from his own mouth ring in his ears as he sits down next to Vanitas. ]

I've been wondering... do you like cucumbers?

[ It's alarming, sometimes, how he feels more at ease in Noé's presence lately. Ever since that evening and the morning that followed after, he's felt a strange need to accept Noé's company more often than not. So when he sees him come out onto the roof, he looks up at him expectantly.

And then the cucumbers come up. Well. It's a good thing he'd read up on something, recently. ]

...Is this because of the lake creature?

I'm asking about you.

[ So, in other words, yes, this is because of the kappa. ]

Do you like them or not?

[ The mountain area isn't his favorite one because of the lower temperatures. There's a simple solution to that—a sweater and a pair of boots, but Cyno refuses to get these from the boutique. Actually, he's here to check on Aether, but it seems that he's not home.

It looks like his housemate is though, considering that he's sitting on the roof. Cyno's gaze lingers on the man before he jumps on the roof from the ground. Something, something, matra training. Conveniently, he's holding a smoothie with two straws. ]

I'm Cyno. Have you seen Aether?

[unchainer]

[ He sees someone approach his home with something in hand...and then suddenly, that person is jumping up and onto the roof. That's a pretty high jump, though it's not entirely surprising, given what he's seen on his adventures.

He looks up at Cyno as he speaks, takes a quick glance at the smoothie and puts two and two together. ]

He's not home.

[ He's fairly certain, anyway, but he's not tracking Aether's movements. ]

Are you asking me to leave that on the counter for him?

[punnyshment]

No.

[ Cyno sits next to Vanitas even though he hasn't asked for a permission to join him. Maybe once in a while General Mahamatra will just do what he wants. ]

Drink this with me.

[ That's it, that's how you make friends. Probably. ]

And then, Vanitas just goes to bid on everyone. ]

Vanitas... why are you doing this? Do you want to take everyone out on a date?

Why are you questioning me, of all people! You were the one who turned in that application, weren't you?!

[... this is honestly the worst possible person who could have walked in for this, but honestly, they both deserve it. Jack's answering grin is much larger than Vanitas', which is probably a warning sign right there. Alas that Jack seems to be intrigued by the idea...]

Ah~ I wasn't planning on getting drunk...

[He sounds mildly chastised as he comes over to the table, but not so much so that he won't plop down in the other chair there. Does that mean he was planning on getting tipsy instead? ... the jury is out on that one.]

And no, but I do have 'wine tasting.' Do you think it would count if I tasted wines while I painted? Killing two birds with one stone, and all that.
