jan event.
summer has arrived
As the last of the sakura blossoms fall away and the leaves on the trees grow into ever more vibrant greens, the familiar buzz of cicadas begins to echo all throughout the isle. Summer is quickly approaching and bringing brighter days and blazing temperatures along with it.
Summer also signals the start of the wine production season. Grapes growing on trellises are a common sight on Crescentview during the summer and a notice on the town memo board from the local barkeep encourages farmers to consider growing some varietal grapes of their own.
Temperatures are rising, so put on a comfortable pair of shorts and head to the Town Plaza to see what’s cooking! While you’re at it, take a look at the calendar for Summer 1st through 15th.
This season’s crops are corn, onion, pumpkin, watermelon, and pineapple. Summer’s seasonal flowers are poppy, rose, sunflower, lily, and hydrangea. As for mushrooms, shimeji, trumpet, and common brown spores are available for the summer.
hot! ...or not
Posted prominently at the top of the Memo Board is a cartoonishly-written advertisement for the first annual Hot or Not hosted by the Goddess herself. Contestants will take to the stage while the audience votes on whether they are as hot as the blazing sun or cooler than a dead fish. Leave your egos at the door! ICly, this event takes place on Summer 8th.
task board
The task board is located in Town Square and changes from season to season. In real time, a season is one month long. The following tasks are available from January 1st to February 1st and more tasks may be added mid-month.
Certain rewards are only available through event participation, so please keep this in mind when planning your threads. Multiple tasks may be completed within a single thread, but when turning in, please link to the individual tags in which each task was completed.
Finally, rewards are per character, not per farm, so those with housemates may want to coordinate with one another with regard to what animals you’re bringing home to your farm.
This month’s tasks are centered around getting to know your fellow neighbors on a deeper level. As such, the Goddess has put together a small human scavenger hunt to encourage people to learn more about the people they are living with — and hopefully falling in love with.
Find someone who...
1. Was born in the summer
2. Pours milk into their bowl before the cereal
3. Plays a musical instrument
4. Has more than 3 siblings
5. Works out 5 times a week or more
6. Doesn’t like animals
7. Would like to date the Harvest Goddess
8. Has traveled around the world
9. Speaks two or more languages
10. Is wearing socks that aren’t black or white
Each submission will earn you two random bags of summer seeds. Specify whether you want crop, flower, or mushroom spores in your submission. This task can be completed a total of 10 times.
Many ingredients used in wine production grow in the summer, but so do a variety of tea plants and grains. Grapes, tea shrubs and grains like wheat and barley can all be grown on your farm or in your greenhouse, if you have one.
Complete the following tasks to earn yourself some nice beverage-producing crops for the farm:
1. Take something from last month’s harvest and gift it to a neighbor. You can give it to them directly, cook it into a meal, etc. Alternatively, craft them a bouquet, flower crown, or another gift from the flowers you grew last season. Complete 3 times for a total of 6 grape starters.
2. Share a piece of hot gossip with a neighbor or exchange secrets with them. It doesn’t have to be your secret! Complete 3 times for a total of 6 tea starters.
3. Exercise with someone. Go on a run, swim in the ocean, help them stretch out! Complete 3 times for a total of 6 grain crops. You may choose from wheat, barley, rye, or rice.
Summer is the perfect time to hang out on the beach and splash around in the ocean. Participate in some summer fun at the beach and earn more animals for your barn and coop.
1. Swim in the ocean, build a sandcastle, or bury someone in the sand. Do any of the following for one of the following animals: cow, sheep, alpaca, or goat. This task can be completed once.
2. Participate in Hot or Not. It’s an annual tradition! Submit yourself or comment on someone else for a single chicken or rabbit. This task can be completed once.
local happenings
The Crescentview Times newspaper has chronicled the latest happenings around the island. A physical copy of the paper will arrive on your doorstep early in the morning on Summer 1st.
Recently, a group of townspeople have taken it upon themselves to check out the abandoned mine. They’ve made good headway on opening up the path in the hopes that would-be explorers will be able to take to the mines and find some of Crescentview’s fabled gems and minerals buried in its depths. They expect to be done by Summer 15th.
A strange “gurgling whisper” has been reported by some concerned townsfolk living in the mountains. The concerning sounds are coming from one of the lakes at the foot of the mountain. Supposedly, the voice is asking for offerings of... something. The townsfolk have yet to identify what exactly is being asked for.
A hurricane has been brewing off the southern coast of Crescentview. Meteorologists have yet to determine whether the hurricane will make landfall or not, so stay tuned for more updates.

[ Now, he thought he had learned enough about the sun thus far to be fine. He limited his time outside, he never looked up too far before it started to rise nor dip over the horizon, and the temperatures were pleasant enough if not somewhat warmer than he was used to.
That was a wrong assumption.
On your travels, you might hear a barrage of aggravated, accented cursing- a peek around will reveal Adelis, very much hiding himself in the shade of a tree...and glaring at his bare arms, as if that will fix the obvious signs of sunburn that are showing. His face is fine, apparently, but his poor, pasty arms...congratulations if you stuck around for too long, because now he's glaring at you, making a very sharp gesture at his reddened skin. ]
Is there any particular reason I'm fucking burning?
[ Nobody told him about the sunburn.... ]
≫ Definitely not
[ He's giving the new memo on the board the most unimpressed look a man can muster. He only peeked from morbid curiosity, but he sees there was probably no point. ]
...Is this not simply Bed, Wed, Butcher with less steps. [ He's muttering to himself, furrowing his brows. ] And in front of a bloody live audience, no less. Hells.
≫ Scavengers
[ Now, this one is simple enough. Not that this is really information he cares to have, but it's easy, quick, and painless. Hopefully. ]
If you've a moment to spare, would you care to exchange?
[ He's all smiles, now. ]
For the scavenger hunt, that is.
≫ Exorcise
[ Adelis, unrelenting workaholic that he is, can be found taking his jogs fairly early in the morning- inconspicuously plainly dressed, no less, as you can only practice so much in a corset and heels. You're more than welcome to join, if you happen to pass by.
Alternatively, stroll by the forest and you might catch a few flashes of pink out of the corner of your eye. A step closer, and there's Adelis- no weapon in hand nor in sight, but there are numerous suspicious gouges in the trees around him...
Lock eyes with him, and you might yourself being addressed...but you'll find with a light fizz of static, the voice is inside your head, rather than coming from his mouth. ]
If you don't watch your step, I'll hit you next.
[ He won't. Probably. Just a little warning. ]
no subject
It is instinct, to stay out of sight in a new land. Also, the branches overlap thickly here with tree shouldered up against tree, so it feels cooler. Not that it saves him from the ambient heat.
The familiar voice, however, gives him pause, and he lets Adelis keep to his muttering for a time as he inspects him from his height. His perception roll wasn't exactly excellent, but he's fairly certain Adelis looks a lot less dead and a lot more red than he's use to.
Most importantly, though, Adelis is gladly alive. (Well, maybe not gladly at this specific juncture.)
A casual voice comes from the tree some branches above, somewhat hidden in the foliage but relatively visible: )
Really, I was hoping you could tell me what this was all about. Is this a broad furnace, you suppose?
( Vampires damned their people to eternal night and chill, and this Godess (question mark) damned her people to eternal sun-fire and heat. Seems reasonable.
Mishka, for his part, is dressed as one might expect from him, if stripped down to the bare essentials and looking on the verge of heat stroke, drinking from a waterskin. He figured he'd stray of his weird hole-riddled shelter to explore this new realm, but perhaps it had been an overambitious venture. )
no subject
This, however, is probably the one he was expecting the least.
Adelis, in all his furious, sunburnt glory, finds himself freezing at the familiar voice, having a few graceless moments where he thinks he just might be hallucinating. Some people do come from the same place, as he's come to learn, but he found it highly unlikely he'd ever be joined by another seeing as how a month has already passed in relative quiet.
But he looks up, sees that familiar face currently cradled ever so lightly in the branches of a tree, and has to resist the urge to chuck the nearest object just to make sure that he's not seeing things again....or out of spite. Spite is also an option, considering their last 'meeting'. ]
What the fuck. [ He doesn't need to be cursing this much, but he's having a moment of shock, so excuse him. ] How long have you been here?
[ It can't have been long. He would have known, sniffed him out somehow- Mishka is far more skilled than he is, true, but Adelis is far from a pushover himself. He finds himself getting up, stinging arms forgotten for the time being, to get a better look at the bastard in the boughs. ]
And of course it's not a bloody furnace, fit as you look to evaporate on the spot. It's the sun.
no subject
There is a pause following that word, Mishka's eyebrows raising only slightly. This had been the holy grail of so many of their company; should they get the sun, should they get this heart of Aurelia, it would be a salve unto their problems. They would have power; they would have strength; they would have control.
Mishka, too, was not free from this. To him, this sun had meant freedom.
The pause passes, and then his lips curl into his more common smile - and he laughs; not loudly, not soft. Wry, perhaps. Would that Ser Michalek could see his aspiration taken from him and placed as if an ornament unto the sky so people could farm, of all mundane aspirations. It made every sun-seeking endeavor seem rightly selfish in comparision. )
'The sun,' is it? First I've heard of that. And yet you sound so familiar - how long have you been here?
( He hangs his waterskin from a hook at his belt and hops down a branch or two onto the lowest one, slipping into a sit. As if he needed to be much taller than he already was, even if only for a moment. )
I'd venture I've been here, arguably, hours? I can count the time by the rotation of the stars, but those seem conspicuously absent here. I spent some time in my - my? - little shelter, but the heat only grew more blistering.
( In other words, he's been here since morning and the heat only got worse into the day, which brings them to now. He slips down from the branch finally, landing neatly on his feet before Adelis. )
Now, you'll have to humor me-- ( In the six seconds he holds Adelis's attention before he presumes he'll have to dodge a rock or a smack, ) Does the general sensation of blindness wear off, and will I soon find myself like in the redness of your visage, inevitably?
no subject
To see it now, so casually, made his brows furrow. Even more so, at that sardonic laugh. Mishka has always been the sort both difficult to read and easy to predict, depending on how you knew him...and Adelis knew him more well than he'd like. ]
I'd hardly call myself familiar, despite what you might think. And it's been a month.
[ He takes the slightest step back as the older man slips down much akin to a snake, not entirely pleased at still having to look up, but more interested in what he's hearing than the concept of bitching more than he already plans to. Still, only hours...no wonder he had yet to see hair or hair of his presence. At the very least, it means his skills haven't degenerated even with the lack of work. ]
I suggest you get used to it, then, as you'll only see them half the day. It's afternoon now- or mid-day, as I prefer.
[ And Mishka is certainly right, because while Adelis will let him have his little questions, all smiles and lackadaisical manner as he always is, it's not meant to last. ]
It'll wear off if you blink enough, but hide away like a rat and you'll find it burning more than most. [ It's as blunt as it always is, but the elder is no doubt use to the sting of his tongue by now. ] And hell if I know, but perhaps it would do you some good. Now if you don't mind, I find myself owing you something long overdue.
[ Said something is the arc of his hand, as he goes in for a harsh smack across the other's face. Roll to dodge, jackass. ]

It's notably a game of 'which would you prefer', not 'all of them'. [ Obviously. ] I've little interest in wedding anyone, whether I bed them or not.

[He knew this place was a little too quiet. Steinbeck freezes in place (it reminds him of a scene not too long ago, with a knife pressed to his throat) and he blinks, raising his hands in apology. That voice in his head....what is that, telepathy? Is he an Ability User?]
Sorry, sorry. I'll stay right here. [And a little huff, attempting to keep his expression casual.] Hit me with what, exactly...?
no subject
Mm. Aren't you smart. [ It's his actual voice, this time, coming from his mouth. And it's just as sarcastic as it sounds, evidently. ] And as for what I'd hit you with...
[ The question goes unanswered for a few moments, before he opts to lift his hand and give it a little flick in the direction of the tree right next to Steinbeck- and with a barely there crackle in the air, something sharp and pink thunks into the wood. It looks like a knife, but the form seems to lightly roil and spark, as if it's not entirely solid.
Then, it disappears, leaving nothing but the hole in the bark. ]
That.
no subject
[His eyebrows furrow, trying to understand - like a knife thrower, he thinks, but its not any knife he's ever seen.]
Huh. Nice ability you have. [He's sincere about that.] What is it, exactly?
no subject
Revealing one's tricks to everyone who asks is tantamount to suicide.

WILDCARD
He foregoes working out dialing on that telephone contraption, because Adelis may not pick up anyway. How would he even know Syrlya was calling? So he makes a trip down to his neighboring farm, this time without tripping over any fences even as his pace picks up upon spotting him.] Adelis! Hello, how are--oh, you're looking a little red.
no subject
It's nearly that time of day, however, so he'll risk it to get a bit of work done- something he barely manages to start before he spots a familiar face out of the corner of his eye. This time, luckily, there's no collisions with his fence...but the callout does make his face twitch in irritation. Really. ]
I am fully aware. [ Somebody's a bit sour, evidenced by the grimace as he lets his gaze fall down to his arms. At least they're not as red as they were...? ] Somebody neglected to inform me the sun had the capacity to burn. I've been dealing with it.
[ He's Handling It. ]

Sunburn. [ He says this outright. Little point in dancing around it.
He moves towards Adelis to get a better look. ]
The sun is a key ingredient in the formula of thriving life, but too much of it can cause harm. Those with more delicate skin, even some sylvari, will experience adverse affects under harsher rays.
[ He looks around for a moment, then reaches for a particular leafy branch to snap off and hand to Adelis, like an umbrella. ]
Come. Let's get you to the clinic.
no subject
Of course. As if the blinding wasn't bloody bad enough-
[ He likes the sun, he really does, for all his insistent bitching- but it's really putting him through the gauntlet here. At least someone here is straightforward enough, even if the explanation doesn't help his dour look- he's filing it away, anyway. ]
Perhaps this would have been more useful to know before I spent all damn morning in the fields...
[ He's not accusing Trahearne, despite his hissed muttering. It's more of a general thing, given he's glaring more at his skin than anyone else. The suggestion, however, earns a suspicious glance, as does the, uh....branch? He takes it in a brief moment of bewilderment, but voices his concerns all the same. ]
The clinic-? Is it honestly that serious to require a medic?
[ He's, uh...never really dealt with anything that wasn't a healing spell or a Syndicate ordered professional, and those are in severely short supply. Doctors are hardly a staple for people who can nary afford food to begin with. ]
no subject
Oh well. ]
I don't know the specifics--I'm no expert on the machinations of the human body. [ He turns his attention to the path ahead. ] But I have seen colleagues fall victim to sunburn, and it's the recovery period that seems to take the biggest toll. As far as I've observed, it can be pure agony if not given the proper treatment and aftercare.
[ He glances over at Adelis again. Sorry, not pulling any punches today. ]
Preventative measures are your best tool. Granted, you did not know of this ahead of time, but consider it a lesson for next time.
